Free LEI Lookup
An LEI lookup returns the legal entity registered to a Legal Entity Identifier, the 20-character code that companies use in financial markets. This free tool reads the global LEI index and shows the legal name, whether the entity and its registration are current, the jurisdiction and the next renewal date. You can also search by company name.

Need this at scale? LEI Lookup API
Look up a list of LEIs from a CSV file or your own code: status, jurisdiction, addresses, renewal dates and parent companies, charged only when a record is found.
An LEI lookup tells you who a legal entity is and whether its code can still be trusted as current.
Paste a 20-character LEI and the tool reads the global LEI index, the public register of legal entity identifiers. You see the legal name it was issued to, whether the entity is active, whether the LEI registration is current or has lapsed, the jurisdiction and the date the next renewal is due. A registration that has lapsed or is past its renewal date is flagged, so an out-of-date code is not mistaken for a live one.
If you only know the company, type its name instead. The search matches every word of the registered legal name and returns up to ten entities, and the first three are shown here with their codes. Paste one code into the box to see that entity's record. To keep the tool free for everyone, a lookup that someone made within six hours is shown again.
The last two characters of an LEI are check digits calculated from the other eighteen, so a typo or a transposed character is caught before the index is asked. A free trial adds the legal and headquarters addresses, the direct and ultimate parent companies, the previous names and the business register number, and looks up whole lists of LEIs from a CSV file.
An LEI identifies a legal entity, and these tools check the rest of the business.
To check whether a company's VAT number is a valid registration, use the free EU VAT number checker. To see how old a company's website is, use the free domain age checker. To check whether a business's website is legitimate before you trade with it, try the free website legitimacy checker.
An LEI lookup returns these fields, and each one answers a different question.
This is an invented result for a made-up entity, laid out the way a real one comes back. The name, the status, the jurisdiction and the renewal date are free on this page, and a free trial opens the rest.

Looking up an LEI takes three steps and no signup.
Enter an LEI or a company name
Paste the 20-character code, or type the name to find it. Spaces and dashes in a code are ignored.
The global LEI index is read
The check digits are tested first, then the index is asked for the record, or for the entities that match the name.
Read the record
You see the legal name, the status, the jurisdiction and the renewal date. The addresses, the parent companies and lists are in the free trial.
One lookup travels from your box to the global LEI index and back in four steps.
This is the path a single lookup takes. A code with the wrong check digits is refused before the index is asked.

The LEI Lookup API returns the same record as JSON from one request.
Send an LEI, or a legal name to search, to the endpoint with your API key. A record found costs 2 credits and a code the index does not hold costs 0. The headline facts are in classification, and the full record is in insights.lei_lookup_result.

You can see at a glance whether the LEI is still current.
The registration status and the next renewal date come with every record, and a registration that has lapsed or is past its renewal date is flagged.
A company name is enough to find the code.
Type the name and get up to ten matching entities with their codes, then paste one code to see the record.
A mistyped code is caught before the index is asked.
The two check digits at the end of the code are calculated from the rest, so a typo is refused with a clear message.
The record is read from the public index when you ask.
The result is the index's own record, so an update the entity filed shows up as soon as the index has it.

Frequently asked questions
Is this LEI lookup free?
Yes, with no signup. Each visitor gets a few lookups a day. A free trial adds the addresses, the parent companies and the previous names, and looks up whole lists from a CSV file or the API.
Where does the LEI data come from?
From the global LEI index, the public register of legal entity identifiers that anyone can read. The index holds the record each entity filed when it registered its code.
Can I find an LEI from a company name?
Yes. Type the name and the tool returns up to ten entities whose registered legal name contains every word you typed, and the first three are shown free. Paste one of the codes into the box to see that entity's record.
What does a lapsed registration mean?
Every registration has a renewal date, and one that is not renewed by then shows as lapsed. The tool flags a lapsed registration or a date that has passed, so check that as well as the name before you rely on a code.
What can I learn from an LEI?
It identifies one legal entity: the name it is registered under, its jurisdiction, whether it is active and when its registration is next due. Use it to match a counterparty to the right legal entity before you run the checks your policy needs.
What does an LEI look like?
It is 20 letters and digits, and the last two are check digits calculated from the first eighteen. A typo or a transposed character is caught before the index is asked, and spaces and dashes are ignored.
How fresh is the record?
A lookup reads the index when you ask. To keep the tool free for everyone, a lookup that someone made within six hours is shown again.
Can I look up a list of LEIs at once?
Yes, in a free trial. Upload a CSV with an lei column or call the LEI Lookup API. Each record found costs 2 credits, and a code the index does not hold costs nothing.
People who look up an LEI also search for these.
