Need this at scale? Skip Trace API

Skip trace a name and US address to a phone number with its line type and a Do Not Call flag, one record at a time, by CSV or by API.

A skip trace turns a name and an address into a phone number you can call.

Skip tracing means finding a way to reach someone from the details you already hold. The usual starting point is a name and the last address on file: a homeowner on a county list, a borrower who stopped answering, a party a court paper has to reach. The missing piece is almost always the phone number.

Enter a first and last name with a US street address, city and ZIP above. The free search tells you whether a number was found, shows its area code and last two digits, and says whether it is a mobile, a landline or a VoIP line and whether it is on the National Do Not Call Registry. Nothing is sent to the person, so they never see that they were searched.

One record at a time suits a quick check. A list needs every row traced, so a 7-day free trial shows the full numbers and runs whole files by CSV upload or API at 10 credits a record, about 5 cents on the Starter plan.

Two guides and two comparisons go with this search.

For how investors build a list and work it from names to signed deals, read our real estate skip tracing guide. For how collection teams find a debtor who moved and stay inside the calling rules, read our debt collection skip tracing guide. To compare what each service returns and how it bills, see our list of the best skip tracing services. And to keep the numbers you find out of trouble before you call, use our free DNC check.

A skip trace returns these fields, and each one changes what you do next.

This is an invented result for a made-up person, laid out the way a search comes back. The first four fields are free on this page, and a 7-day free trial adds the full number.

  1. Full phone number(813) 555-0142
  1. Phone number

The number found for this name and address, with its area code and last two digits shown. The area code hints at where the number was first issued, not where the person lives today.

  2. Line type

Mobile, landline or VoIP. It matters because the TCPA requires consent before autodialed or prerecorded calls and texts to a mobile (47 U.S.C. 227(b)).

  3. National Do Not Call Registry

Whether the number is on the list the FTC keeps of people who asked not to get sales calls. Listed means leave it out of sales calls and texts unless you hold the person's written permission.

  4. Matched on

The number was tied to both the name and the address you entered, not to the name alone.

  5. Full phone number

All ten digits, ready to dial or to load into a CRM. The free trial shows it, and a CSV upload returns it for every row of a list.

A skip trace takes three steps, and the person is never contacted.

1

Enter the name and address

Type the first and last name, the street address, the city and the 5-digit ZIP. Use the address where the person lives now for the best chance of a match.

2

We search the records

The search matches the name to the address and looks for a phone number tied to both. No call or text goes to anyone.

3

Read the result

You see whether a number was found, its line type, its Do Not Call status and a masked number. The free trial shows the full number.

One skip trace goes from a name and an address to a number you can call.

This is the path one record takes. The free search above shows the result with the number masked, and the free trial shows it in full.

What one skip trace does
  1. A name and an addressFirst and last name, street, city and ZIP, in the box above or as one row of a CSV file.
  2. The record searchThe name is matched to the address, and a phone number tied to both is looked up.Nothing is sent to the person, so they are never told they were searched.
  3. Do Not Call flagEvery number found comes back marked Listed or Not listed on the National Do Not Call Registry.
  4. A number you can useThe number with its line type, ready to call, text or add to your CRM, within the calling rules that apply to it.

Bulk skip tracing runs the same search on a whole list with one CSV file.

The free tool searches one record at a time. With a 1Lookup account you upload a CSV with first name, last name, address, city and ZIP columns in the dashboard, and download it back with these columns added to every row. These rows are invented.

The skip tracing API takes one name and address per request.

To skip trace every record from your own software, see our skip tracing API.

It starts from what you have: a name and an address.

Most lists of homeowners, debtors or old customers carry a name and a mailing address but no phone number. That is exactly what the search takes.

Every number comes back with a Do Not Call flag.

You know before the first call whether the registry rules the number out of sales calls, without a second lookup.

It tells you the line type before you dial.

Mobile, landline or VoIP matters to a calling team, because the TCPA sets stricter consent rules for autodialed calls and texts to a mobile.

Whole lists run through the dashboard or the API.

Upload a CSV in the dashboard or call the API from your CRM. Each record uses 10 credits, from the same balance as every other 1Lookup check.

Who uses this tool

Real estate investors use it to reach owners on a county list.

Absentee owners, probate and pre-foreclosure lists come with names and property addresses. A skip trace adds the phone number so the call can happen.

Collection teams use it when a debtor's number stops working.

Search the name and the last known address to find a current number, and check its Do Not Call status and line type before you call.

Process servers and legal teams use it to reach a party or a witness.

When the only details are a name and an old address, a skip trace finds a number to arrange service or a statement.

Sales teams use it to fill in missing numbers on a lead list.

Leads from a form or an event often lack a phone number. Run the list through the dashboard and the numbers fill in by row.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free skip trace?

Yes, this one. Enter a name and a US address above to see, with no signup, whether a phone number was found, its line type, its Do Not Call status and a masked number. A 7-day free trial shows the full number and includes about 100 skip traces with no payment today.

What is skip tracing?

Skip tracing finds a way to reach a person from what you already know about them, usually a name and a last known address. The name comes from investors, collectors and process servers, who trace people who have skipped town or moved on.

How do I find a phone number from a name and an address?

Enter the first and last name, the street address, the city and the ZIP in the box above and press Find the phone number. A match comes back with the number masked, and the free trial shows all ten digits.

Why is the number partly hidden?

The number belongs to a private person, so the free page shows its area code and last two digits only. The full number is shown inside a 1Lookup account, where every search is tied to the account that ran it.

How much does skip tracing cost?

A 1Lookup skip trace uses 10 credits a record, about 5 cents on the Starter plan and 2 cents on Enterprise. The same credits pay for phone validation, scrubs and every other check, and the 7-day free trial includes about 100 skip traces.

Can I skip trace a list in bulk?

Yes. Upload a CSV in the dashboard with first name, last name, address, city and ZIP for each contact, and download the results with the phone number, its line type and a Do Not Call flag on every row.

Is there a skip tracing API?

Yes. Send the five fields to the /api/v1/phone-append endpoint with your API key and the number comes back in the response, so a CRM, a dialer or a lead form can fill in missing numbers on its own. Every account can send up to 1,000 requests a minute.

Why did the search find no number?

The usual reasons are an old address, a misspelled name or a person whose number is not tied to that address. Try the address where they live now, check the spelling, and use the full street address with its number.

Does skip tracing check Do Not Call?

Yes. Every number found comes back with its National Do Not Call Registry status. To also flag known TCPA litigators, run the numbers through the phone scrub on the same account.

Does the person know I searched for them?

No. The search reads records only. No call, text or email goes to anyone, so the person is never told.

Can I use a skip trace to screen a tenant, an employee or a loan applicant?

No. 1Lookup is not a consumer reporting agency, and its terms rule out using results for credit, insurance, employment, housing or any other purpose governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Does this work outside the United States?

No. The skip trace searches US names and addresses only, and the ZIP has to be a 5-digit US ZIP code.

The first three digits of a US number tell you where it was assigned.

Every area code has its own page with the places it covers, the local time there, and what to do when a call from it looks spoofed. These are the codes people look up most.

Area code 213, downtown Los Angeles, also has a page for each of its 786 prefixes, with the company NANPA lists as the holder.

New area codes catch people out, because a number from one looks unfamiliar even when it is local. These are the newest working codes.
