A business phone number lookup finds the name linked to a phone number. 1Lookup's free business number lookup reads the caller ID name on record for a US number, shows whether it ends in LLC, Inc, Corp or Ltd, and gives the city and state. It does not say whether the number belongs to a business.
- Free, no signup
- US numbers
- Never calls the number
- Says what it cannot show
You can look up a business number in under a minute.
Enter the number.
Type the ten digits of a US number, such as (206) 555-0147, with or without the +1.
Read the caller ID name.
The result shows the name carriers can show on caller ID, or says that none is on record.
Check the ending.
A name that ends in LLC, Inc, Corp or Ltd is a company name on its face. A name without an ending can still belong to a business.
Go further for the street address.
A free account shows the street address on record, and the state's business registry holds the registered company.
Need this at scale? Reverse Phone Lookup API
Look up the name and address on record for whole phone lists through the API or bulk CSV.

A business phone number lookup works from the caller ID name, because that is the name linked to the number.
A phone number does not carry its owner's name. When a call arrives, the called person's carrier looks the number up in a caller ID name database, known as CNAM, and shows the name that comes back. The FCC describes this in its caller ID report to Congress (DA 11-1089). That database entry is the closest thing to a business name that a phone number has, and it is what this lookup reads.
The lookup adds one check on top of the name: whether it ends in a legal ending such as LLC, Inc, Corp or Ltd. State law puts those words in a company's registered name. Delaware, for one, requires an LLC's name to contain the words Limited Liability Company or the abbreviation L.L.C. or the designation LLC, and requires a corporation's name to contain a word such as corporation, incorporated or limited. A name with an ending is a company name on its face.
A name without an ending proves nothing either way. A caller ID name holds up to 15 characters, so a long business name is cut short and its ending is often the part that goes. Many mobile numbers carry no caller ID name at all, and the record does not say whether a number belongs to a business or a person, so this page never claims to.
The SBA's Office of Advocacy counts 29,811,495 small businesses with no employees among the 36,207,130 in the US, which is 82.3% of them. A business number is often one person's line, and that is why the lookup reports the name it finds and leaves the judgment to you.
The reverse phone lookup API returns the same name record for whole lists.
When the lookup has to run inside your own software or across thousands of numbers, the API returns the name, address and line type on record for each one. A lookup that finds a name costs 10 credits, and one that finds nothing costs none. See the reverse phone lookup API. To read only the name a number shows on caller ID, use our free CNAM lookup. To find the person behind a number, use our free reverse phone lookup. To check whether a number is reported as spam, use our free phone number fraud checker. To find a trucking company by its USDOT number, use our free USDOT number lookup.
A business number lookup returns these fields, and each one answers a different question.

Caller ID name
The name carriers can show on caller ID for this number. It holds up to 15 characters, so a long name arrives cut short.
Legal ending in the name
The ending the lookup found in the name: LLC, Inc, Corp or Ltd. It reads None shown when the name has none, which does not rule out a business.
City
The city on the record for the number.
State
The state on the record for the number.
Full street address
The street address and ZIP code on record for the number, which a free account opens.
The lookup reads the caller ID name and checks its ending in three steps.
You enter a US number.
Type or paste ten digits, with or without +1. A number outside the US is told so, because there is no US caller ID name record to check.
We read the caller ID name on record.
1Lookup reads the name record for the number. Nothing is dialed, and a number with no record is reported as having none.
You read the name and its ending.
The result shows the name, whether it ends in LLC, Inc, Corp or Ltd, and the city and state. A free account opens the street address on record.
A business number lookup reads the caller ID name, then checks its ending.
This is the path one lookup takes. The name and its ending are what a number's record can answer, and the registered company sits in a different place.

Most US businesses have no employees, so a business phone number is often one person's line.
The SBA's Office of Advocacy counts 36,207,130 small businesses in the US, which it defines as independent businesses with fewer than 500 employees. 82.3% of them have no paid employees. The Office counts another 21,041 large businesses.

Just over half of new employer establishments close within five years.
The SBA's Office of Advocacy followed new employer establishments from 1994 to 2022. The first column is the average share that survived each number of years, and the last is what is left over, which closed. A number can outlive the business that held it.

State law puts a legal ending in a company's name, and the lookup reads four of them.
These are the endings the lookup picks out of a caller ID name, and the Delaware rules they come from: title 6, section 18-102 for an LLC and title 8, section 102 for a corporation, which is the one linked below. Delaware is one state, and a company formed in another state follows that state's law.
| Ending the lookup reads | Also written as | Where the rule is |
|---|---|---|
| LLC | L.L.C., Limited Liability Company | Delaware Code title 6, section 18-102(1): an LLC's name must contain Limited Liability Company, L.L.C. or LLC |
| Inc | Incorporated | Delaware Code title 8, section 102(a)(1): a corporation's name must contain a word such as incorporated |
| Corp | Corporation | Delaware Code title 8, section 102(a)(1): a corporation's name must contain a word such as corporation |
| Ltd | Limited | Delaware Code title 8, section 102(a)(1): a corporation's name must contain a word such as limited |

It shows the name as the record holds it.
The name is the caller ID record itself, not a guess made from the number's area code or prefix.
It reads the legal ending for you.
LLC, Inc, Incorporated, Corp, Corporation, Ltd and Limited are picked out of the name, including when they are written with periods, such as L.L.C.
It never calls or texts the number.
The lookup reads records, so the number's owner is not contacted and does not know it was looked up.
It says plainly when no name is on record.
A missing name is reported as missing, with a note that some working lines have none, so a blank is not read as a warning.
Who uses this tool
Sales teams use it to check a lead's number before a call.
A caller ID name that matches the company a lead named is one more sign the number is real, and a number with no name is a reason to look a little closer.
Support teams use it to see who a missed call was from.
Before returning a call from a number the system does not know, a team can see the name on record for it.
Finance teams use it to check a vendor's number.
An invoice carries a phone number. The name on record for it can be compared with the name on the invoice before a payment goes out.
Marketers use it to sort company names out of a list.
The legal ending picks out the names that are companies. Names without an ending still need a look, because a name can belong to a business without one.
Frequently asked questions
What is a business phone number lookup?
It finds the name linked to a phone number. For a US number, the name comes from the caller ID name record that carriers read when a call arrives, which is the closest thing to a business name that a number has.
Can I find a business by its phone number for free?
In part. This free tool shows the caller ID name on record, whether it ends in a legal ending such as LLC, and the city and state. The street address on record needs a free account, and the registered company is held by the state's business registry.
Does the lookup tell me whether a number belongs to a business?
Not by itself. The record holds a name, not a business flag. A name that ends in LLC, Inc, Corp or Ltd is a company name on its face, and a name without an ending can still belong to a business.
What does a legal ending in a name mean?
State law requires a company's name to show what kind of company it is. Delaware Code title 6, section 18-102, requires an LLC's name to contain Limited Liability Company, L.L.C. or LLC, and title 8, section 102, requires a corporation's name to contain a word such as corporation, incorporated or limited. Each state sets the rules for companies formed there.
Why does the name on caller ID look cut short?
A caller ID name holds up to 15 characters under industry convention, spaces included, so a longer business name is cut. The ending is often the part that is lost, which is why a name with no ending proves nothing.
Why does a business number show no caller ID name?
A name shows only when the number has an entry in a caller ID name database. Many mobile numbers have none, and some landlines and business lines have none either. The name also depends on the called person's carrier choosing to look it up.
Can the caller ID name be wrong or faked?
Yes. The FCC says the name is only as accurate as its database, and that bad actors can link numbers they control to misleading names, such as a bank's name. Treat the name as one clue and confirm a business through a number or website you know is real.
How is this different from a reverse phone lookup?
This page is built around the caller ID name and its legal ending, which is what a business number carries. The reverse phone lookup is built around the person behind a number. Both read the same kind of record for a US number.
Can I look up a toll-free business number?
Toll-free numbers are held through a registry that carrier records do not cover, so this lookup cannot name their holder. Use our toll-free number lookup to confirm the type and date the code.
Does the lookup work for Canadian or other non-US numbers?
No. It reads US caller ID name records only, and a Canadian or other non-US number is told so. Use our carrier lookup for the carrier and line type of a number in any country.
Does the lookup call the number or tell its owner?
No. It reads records only, so nothing is dialed or sent, and the owner is not told anyone looked.
How current is the name on record?
It is as current as the database it comes from. Businesses open and close often: the SBA's Office of Advocacy reports that 49.2% of new employer establishments from 1994 to 2022 were still open after five years. A number can outlive the business that had it, so compare the name with the one you expect.
How much does a business phone number lookup cost per number?
A business phone number lookup that finds a name costs 10 credits in the API or a CSV upload, and one that finds nothing costs nothing. That is about $49.50 per 1,000 on the Starter plan, $35.20 on Growth, $32.00 on Professional and $19.99 on Enterprise. The free tool on this page checks one number at a time with no signup, and every plan starts with a 7-day free trial.
Is there an API that looks up business names by phone number?
Yes. The 1Lookup reverse phone lookup API takes a US number and returns the name on record with the city, state and street address, one number at a time in real time or for whole lists from a CSV upload, starting with a 7-day free trial.
Is this business phone number lookup really free?
Yes. The tool is free to use online and rate-limited for fair access, and it needs no signup. To see the street address on record, or to look up numbers in bulk, sign up for a 7-day free trial, then use the API as you scale.
