Free Instagram Username Checker: Is That Handle Taken?
Pick a network, type the name you want, and find out whether anyone is already using it. If the handle is taken you also see who holds it, how many followers they have, and whether they are verified.
An Instagram username checker tells you whether a handle is already in use before you claim it. 1Lookup's free checker looks for a profile at that name on Instagram or nine other networks and returns taken or available, plus the display name, follower count and verified status of whoever holds it.
Availability results reflect whether a profile answers to that name at the moment we check. They are not a reservation and not a guarantee: a name with no visible profile can still be reserved by the platform, held by a private or deactivated account, or blocked for trademark reasons, and only the network itself can confirm you may register it. Nothing here is legal or trademark advice. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Facebook, Threads, Bluesky, Truth Social, Pinterest and LinkedIn are trademarks of their respective owners. 1Lookup is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any of them.

Check the handle before you commit to the name
Naming is the cheap part. The expensive part is finding out three weeks later that the handle you built a logo around belongs to a dormant account from 2014. This Instagram username checker answers the question before you print anything: type the name, pick the network, and see whether a profile already answers to it. If one does, you get the display name behind it, the follower count and whether the account carries a verified badge, which is usually enough to tell a real business from a squatter.
Available here means one specific thing: nothing answers to that name right now. It does not mean the platform will let you register it. Names get reserved, deactivated, held on private accounts, blocked for trademark reasons, or parked by someone who switched their profile to private last year. Every one of those looks identical to a free name from the outside. So treat a green result as a strong shortlist signal, then type it into the signup box on the network itself to confirm. That last step takes ten seconds and it is the only real proof.
The other half of naming is consistency. A brand that is @northlightco on Instagram and @northlight_co on TikTok and northlightcompany on YouTube is three brands as far as a customer is concerned, and it costs you every time someone types the wrong one. Checking one name across every network before you decide is how you find the version that is free everywhere, which is almost always worth more than your first choice being free in one place. Run your top three candidates through each network and pick the one with the cleanest sweep.
How to check if a username is taken
Pick the network and type the name
Start with the platform that matters most to your brand, Instagram by default, and type the handle without the @. Spelling counts: a dot, an underscore and a hyphen are three different usernames, so check the exact string you plan to print on a business card.
We look for a profile at that name
We ask the network for the page that sits at that exact handle. If a profile comes back, the name is taken and we report what that profile displays. If the network has nothing at that address, no account is using it, and the result says available.
Read it, then check your other networks
A taken result names the account holder, its follower count and whether it is verified, which tells you whether you are up against a live business or an abandoned handle. Then switch the platform picker and run the same name again to see how far your shortlist really gets.
Taken and available are different answers
Most checkers show a green tick and stop. This one tells you what the green tick is worth: available means no profile exists at that name today, which is a shortlist signal, not a reservation. We say so on the result rather than hiding it.
You see who has it, not just that it is gone
A taken handle is not a dead end until you know who holds it. The result gives you the display name, the follower count and the verified flag, which is the difference between a brand you will never dislodge and a dormant account with forty followers.
One name, every network you care about
The picker covers Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Facebook, Threads, Bluesky, Truth Social, Pinterest and LinkedIn. Run your candidate through each one before you commit, because a name that is free on Instagram and gone on TikTok is a name you will end up changing.
Built for shortlists, not single guesses
Naming rarely stops at one candidate. Five free checks a day covers a shortlist by hand, and the free account adds CSV upload for when the shortlist turns into a spreadsheet.
Who uses this tool
Naming a new business
You have three candidate names and a logo designer waiting. Check each one on the networks your customers actually use before you brief anyone, because changing a handle after launch means changing every link, bio and business card that points at it.
Launching a creator brand
A creator name has to work on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube at minimum, and ideally read the same in a video outro. Test the exact spelling on all three before your first upload, not after the audience has learned the wrong one.
Buying a domain and matching the handles
Domain availability and handle availability rarely line up. Check the handle at the same time you check the domain, so you do not buy a five-year registration for a name whose Instagram belongs to a coffee shop in Melbourne.
Defending a name you already use
If you run under one handle and never claimed the others, someone else can. Check your own name on every network you have not signed up for yet and find out whether it is still free or already sitting on someone else's profile.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if an Instagram username is available?
Type the name into the box above with Instagram selected and press check. If no profile answers to that handle you get an available result; if one does, you get the account behind it. For a name you are serious about, confirm it in the Instagram signup or username-change screen too, because the platform is the only thing that can actually reserve it for you.
Does available mean I can definitely register the username?
Available means no profile answers to that name at the moment we look, and the platform can still refuse it for reasons that are invisible from outside. Treat available as a strong shortlist signal and confirm on the network before you commit.
What is the difference between an available username and an inactive one?
Available means nothing comes back at all. Inactive means an account exists but is barely used: a small follower count, no verified badge, nothing that looks like a live business. Inactive handles are not available, and platforms rarely release them. Knowing the difference is still useful: a dormant holder tells you a close variation of the name is unlikely to collide with anyone active.
What should I do if the username I want is already taken?
Work through variations in order. First the name with your category attached (getflint, flintapp, flinthq), then the name with a location or niche (flintaustin), then the name with the or official in front. Avoid numbers and doubled letters, which read as a knock-off account. Check each variation here before you fall in love with it, and check it on every network, not just the one you started on.
Can I use this as a TikTok username checker too?
Yes. Switch the picker from Instagram to TikTok and run the same name. One thing to watch: each network has its own rules about which characters a username may contain and how long it can be, so the exact string that is free on one may not even be a legal handle on another. Check the version you actually intend to use, punctuation included.
Can I see who owns a taken username?
You see what the profile shows: the display name on the account, its follower count and whether it carries a verified badge. That is enough to judge whether the holder is a live brand, a personal account or something dormant. We do not return a real name, an email address or any contact detail.
How many usernames can I check for free?
Five checks a day on this tool and fifteen across the 1Lookup free tools, measured per IP address, with a short gap between checks. Three candidate names across four networks fits inside that. Past it, a free account is 1,000 lookups over a seven-day trial with CSV upload, which is what you want if the shortlist runs to dozens.
Does a username check cost anything on the paid API?
Only when the name is taken. The paid Social Profile Check endpoint charges 10 credits when it finds a profile and nothing at all when it does not, because there is no record to return. For handle hunting that shape works in your favor: every name that turns out to be free costs you nothing, and you only pay for the ones already gone.
