The short answer

A free trial adds the full breakdowns.

Complaint Check API

Screen a whole list of companies for complaints with a CSV file or the API.

Screen a list of lenders, banks and collectors: complaint totals, the 12-month trend, response times and the products and issues behind them, at 2 credits per company found.

A complaint lookup tells you in seconds what the CFPB has published about a company.

Enter a company name. The tool matches it against the CFPB's own list of companies and counts the complaints published under the name it finds: the total, the complaints from the last 12 months and from the 12 months before, and the date of the newest one.

It also shows the share of responses the CFPB records as sent on time, the share of finished complaints that ended in relief, the number still in progress, and the product and the issue named most often. The company comes back the way the CFPB spells it, in capital letters. To keep the tool free for everyone, a company looked up in the last six hours is shown again.

A name the database holds no complaints for costs no credits. A free trial adds the five products and issues named most often with their counts, every way the company responded and the channels the complaints came in through, and checks many companies at once.

One lookup counts the complaints the CFPB has published for a company.

This is the path a single lookup takes. Nobody is contacted and nothing is filed.

  2. The name is matchedChecked against the CFPB's own list of companies, and the best match is kept.A name the database holds no complaints for stops here and costs no credits.

Bulk company checks run the same lookup on a whole list with one CSV file.

The free tool checks one company at a time. With a 1Lookup account you upload a CSV file in the dashboard, pick the column that holds the company names and download the same file back with the result columns filled in on every row. These rows are invented.

One complaint lookup shows the total, the trend and the response record of a company.

  • The year is set against the year before.

You see the complaints from the last 12 months beside the 12 months before them, and the change between the two, so a trend is one line instead of two searches.

  • Response times and outcomes come as shares.

The share answered on time and the share closed with relief are worked out for you, with the count still in progress left out of the second.

  • The product and the issue named most often are shown.

You see what the complaints are mostly about, in the CFPB's own category names, without reading a single one.

  • A name with no published complaints costs no credits.

A company the database holds none for, or a name spelled differently, returns a plain none found.

Lenders, compliance teams, reporters and consumers all check complaints with this tool.

  • Lenders and marketplaces reviewing a partner

Check how many complaints the CFPB has published naming a lender, servicer or collector before you sign a referral or partnership deal.

  • Compliance and risk teams screening a counterparty

Read the published count and its 12-month change beside the registration and filings you already collect.

  • Journalists and researchers looking at a company

See the total, the recent trend and the product named most often before you open the CFPB's own search tool for the complaints themselves.

  • Consumers comparing a company they are about to use

Read what the CFPB has published about a bank, card issuer or loan servicer, and how quickly the company answered.

These are the questions people ask about the free CFPB complaint lookup.

Is the CFPB complaint lookup really free?

Yes. You get a few lookups a day without an account, and nothing to pay. A free 1Lookup trial removes the daily limit and adds the products, issues, responses and channels behind the count.

Where does the information come from?

From the Consumer Complaint Database that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) publishes. The CFPB publishes a complaint after the company responds or after 15 days, whichever comes first, and says the database generally updates daily. The page reads it when you ask, so the result is as current as the database.

What do the complaint counts measure, and what do they not measure?

They are counts of the complaints the CFPB has published naming a company, and nothing more. The CFPB's database page says these complaints are not a statistical sample of consumers' experiences in the marketplace and are not representative of all consumers' experiences with a financial product or company. Only complaints sent to companies for a response are eligible to be published.

Why does a company come back with none found?

The database lists only companies with at least one published complaint. A company with none, a company the CFPB does not take complaints about, such as most retailers, and a name spelled differently from the CFPB's own all return none found, and nothing is used up. Try a shorter name before you read a miss as none.

How does it match the name I type?

The name is matched against the CFPB's own list of companies, and the best match is counted. The result shows the name as the CFPB spells it, so you can see which entry was used. A parent and its subsidiaries are often listed separately, so type the exact name you want when the first match is not the right one.

What does the change against the year before mean?

It compares the complaints received in the last 365 days with the 365 days before them, so 1,960 against 1,580 reads up 24.1%. The newest weeks run short, because a complaint appears only after the company responds or 15 days pass.

What do answered on time and closed with relief mean?

Answered on time is the share of responses the CFPB marks as sent on time, out of those it marks on time or late. Closed with relief is the share of finished complaints that ended in monetary or non-monetary relief, with complaints still in progress left out.

Does it show the complaints themselves?

No. It shows counts and categories, never an individual complaint or what a consumer wrote. For individual complaint records, the CFPB's own search tool is free.

Can I check a list of companies at once?

Yes, in a free trial. Upload a CSV with a company column or call the Complaint Check API. Each company with published complaints costs 2 credits, and a name the database holds none for costs nothing.
