The short answer

A sanctions list search checks a name against lists that US government agencies publish. This free tool searches 12 of them, kept by the Treasury, Commerce and State departments, and answers clear, possible match or match, with the closest match, its list and its programs. A free trial adds addresses, aliases and dates of birth.

  • No signup needed
  • 12 US government lists
  • Read from the lists themselves
Sanctions Screening API

Screen a whole list of names against the US lists with a CSV file or the API.

Screen a whole list of names against the US government's sanctions and trade-restriction lists: match, possible match or clear, with the list, program and country of every hit, at 3 credits per screening.

A sanctions list search tells you in seconds whether a name is on a US sanctions or export-control list.

Type the name of a person, a company or a vessel. The tool searches the US Consolidated Screening List, which the International Trade Administration publishes from the lists of the Treasury, Commerce and State departments, and shows whether the name is clear, a possible match or a match.

A possible match or a match shows the closest listed name, the list it is on and its programs. Word order, accents and endings such as Inc and LLC do not matter, and a longer word still matches a spelling a letter or two off. Every answer says how many lists were searched and the date they were updated. To keep the tool free for everyone, a name searched in the last six hours is shown again.

Only US government lists are searched. The EU, UN and UK lists are not included, and a name in another alphabet is refused because the US lists spell every name in Latin letters. A name is checked once, when you ask, and is not watched afterwards.

A sanctions search returns these facts, and each one answers a different question.

This is an invented result for a made-up company, laid out the way a real one comes back. The closest match is free on this page, and a free trial opens the rest.

Searching the lists takes three steps and no signup.

  1. Enter the name

Type the name of a person, company or vessel, the way it is written on the paper in front of you. Capitals and the order of the words do not matter.

  2. We search the 12 lists

The name is reduced to its words and compared with every record on the Treasury, Commerce and State lists, aliases included.

  3. Read the answer

You see whether the name is clear, a possible match or a match, and for a match the closest listed name, its list and its programs.

One search reads the 12 lists for a name and shows the closest match.

This is the path a single search takes. Nobody is contacted and nothing is filed.

What one sanctions search does
  1. You enter a nameA person, a company or a vessel, in Latin letters.
  2. The entry is checkedA name that is too short, too long or has no Latin letters is refused before the lists are read.An entry that cannot be screened stops here and costs no credits.
  3. The 12 lists are searchedEvery record that shares a word with the name is scored, aliases included.
  4. You see the answerClear, possible match or match, with the closest match, its list and the date of the lists.

The 12 lists in the search come from three departments, and each one covers a different kind of party.

These are the lists the search reads, in the words the International Trade Administration's Consolidated Screening List page uses for them. A result on this page names the list its closest match is on.

Bulk sanctions screening runs the same search on a whole list with one CSV file.

The free tool searches one name at a time. With a 1Lookup account you upload a CSV file in the dashboard, pick the column that holds the names and download the same file back with the result columns filled in on every row. These rows are invented.

The Sanctions Screening API returns the same answer as JSON from one request.

Send the name, with a two-letter country if you like, to the endpoint with your API key. Every completed screening costs 3 credits, a clear one included, and a name that is refused or lists that cannot be read cost 0. One search reads 12 US lists and flags a possible match for review.

  • A possible match is flagged for review and never passed as a verdict.

A name that resembles a listed name comes back as a possible match or a match, because a name alone does not show it is the same party.

  • Word order, endings and small misspellings do not hide a match.

Smith, John is John Smith, Inc and LLC are set aside when other words remain, and a longer word still matches a spelling a letter or two off.

  • The closest match comes back with its list and programs.

You see the listed name, the list it is on, such as the Entity List, and the programs, so you know what kind of listing it is.

  • The date of the lists is in every answer.

Each result says how many lists were searched and the day they were updated, so you know how current the check is.

Fintech teams, exporters, accounts payable and sales teams all search the lists with this tool.

  • Fintech and payments teams checking a new customer

Search the name on an application and see whether it matches a record before you open the account.

  • Exporters checking a buyer or a consignee

See whether a buyer's name is on a Commerce or State list as well as the Treasury's before an order ships.

  • Accounts payable checking a new vendor

Search a vendor's legal name before the first payment is set up, and note the date of the lists.

  • Sales and partnership teams checking a distributor

Search a prospective partner's name before a contract is signed.

These are the questions people ask about the free sanctions list search.

Is the sanctions list search really free?

Yes. You can search names without an account and without paying anything. A free 1Lookup trial removes the daily limit and adds the addresses, aliases, dates of birth and remarks of each match, and every other match.

Where does the information come from?

From the US Consolidated Screening List, which the International Trade Administration publishes from the lists of the Treasury, Commerce and State departments and republishes every day. The lists are refreshed here every 6 hours, and every result shows the date of the lists that were read.

What does a possible match mean?

That the name resembles a listed name, with most of its words in common. A name alone does not show it is the same party, so compare the addresses, aliases and dates of birth before you act.

What does clear mean?

That no record on the 12 US government lists matches the name you entered. It says nothing about the EU, UN or UK lists, which are not part of this tool.

Does it search aliases as well as names?

Yes. Aliases are searched as well as main names, and the closest match shown is the name or alias that matched best.

Why was my entry refused before the search?

A name that is too short or too long, a name with no Latin letters or digits, and one that contains | { or } cannot be screened. The entry is refused with a clear message and does not use up a search.

Can I add a country to the search?

Not on this page. The API and the bulk CSV take an optional two-letter country, which ranks the matches from that country first and never removes one.

How current is the answer?

The lists are refreshed every 6 hours, and a name searched in the last six hours is shown again from the same answer. Every result carries the date of the lists it read.

Can I screen a list of names at once?

Yes, in a free trial. Upload a CSV with a name column or call the Sanctions Screening API. Each completed screening costs 3 credits, a clear one included, and a row that cannot be screened costs nothing.
