At a glance
Here is where 1Lookup wins against SSL Labs, and where SSL Labs still wins.
Both look at the HTTPS certificate of a domain. SSL Labs runs a full assessment of the server, with a grade, the protocols and cipher suites it supports and tests for named attacks, and its API is free to use under terms that restrict commercial use. 1Lookup reads the certificate in one request and returns the verdict with the days left, billed per certificate read, as an API you call from your own product.
- One request and one response: the verdict, the days left and the dates come back together, with no assessment to start and no polling for it to finish
- The status in words (valid, expiring soon, expired, not valid yet, issued for a different name, self-signed or not trusted by browsers) with dates as YYYY-MM-DD and each problem as a sentence, where SSL Labs returns a bit mask and Unix timestamps
- A printed price per certificate read, about $0.010 on Starter, sold as an API you call from your own product, and a domain with no certificate to read costs nothing
- A CSV with a domain column returns one row per domain, and the same key and balance also pay for phone, email and IP validation, and credits roll over for 3 months
What it costs
From $4.00
per 1,000 certificate checks; $9.90 on Starter
- A full TLS assessment, not only a certificate read: the endpoint carries a grade ('A+, A-, A-F, T (no trust) and M (certificate name mismatch)' in the docs), the supported protocols and cipher suites, and tests for named attacks such as Heartbleed, POODLE and ROBOT.
- Revocation and transparency data in the result: the certificate object has a revocationStatus (not checked, revoked, not revoked, check error and more) with CRL and OCSP URIs, and the endpoint reports whether OCSP stapling is deployed and whether certificate transparency information (embedded SCTs) is present.
- Free of charge with a documented API and an open-source reference client (ssllabs-scan); the API page says it allows 'scheduled and bulk assessment'.
- A free web test as well: the SSL Server Test page calls itself a 'free online service' that 'performs a deep analysis of the configuration of any SSL web server on the public Internet'.
- Cached reports do not count against the limit on new assessments: the docs say limits apply to calls that start new assessments, and that following earlier assessments or retrieving results from the cache 'will not be impacted'.

Short answer
SSL Labs offers a free API and web test that assess a server's TLS setup and return a grade, and its terms allow only sites whose owners have given permission and do not allow commercial use without Qualys's express permission. 1Lookup's SSL Certificate Check returns a certificate verdict with the days left in one request for 2 credits, about $0.010 on Starter, charged only when a certificate is read.
What replaces what
Here is which 1Lookup product matches each SSL Labs job.
SSL Labs runs a full assessment that usually takes at least 60 seconds and returns the grade and the protocols. This is the narrower job of reading the certificate, as a single API call that answers in the same response.
Side by side
Both products are measured on the same criteria, using SSL Labs's own published numbers.
| Criteria | ||
|---|---|---|
| Contact-data coverage | EmailPhoneIP | EmailPhoneIP |
| Pricing model | Monthly plans with universal credits; core phone, email and IP lookups cost 1 credit, enrichment and intelligence products cost more | Free to use, with restrictions, and no price is printed. The API page says 'SSL Labs APIs are free to use, with restrictions' and the API docs say the APIs 'are provided free of charge, subject to our terms and conditions'. The terms are the restrictions: the API licence allows inspecting only sites and servers whose owners have given permission, and without Qualys's express permission it does not allow commercial use, use on a public web site, or making the API available to anyone other than your authorized employees. API v4 needs a registration call with an organization email before an assessment. |
| Starting price | $99/mo for 20,000 credits. At 2 credits each (SSL Certificate Check API), that is $9.90 per 1,000 certificate checks on Starter, down to $4.00 on Enterprise. | $0: 'SSL Labs APIs are free to use, with restrictions' (the terms above). |
| Free option | Free single lookups via the online tools at 1lookup.io/tools, no account required | The API and the web SSL Server Test are free of charge under the terms above. No quota is printed: the docs say Qualys may limit concurrent assessments and the number of assessments in a period, and answers 429 when it does. |
| Free trial | 7-day free trial on every plan: $5 of credits on Starter, $20 on Growth, Professional, and Enterprise, with no payment today | No trial: the API is free under its terms. |
| Do credits expire? | Unused monthly credits roll over for 3 months; separately purchased credits last 1 year | No credits: no quota is printed, and Qualys may limit assessments and answer 429. |

A real result
This is what one 1Lookup result looks like.
Send a domain
POST a domain, a web address or an email address. An IP address, a single word or a bare public suffix is refused with a clear error and costs nothing.
We read the certificate
1Lookup looks the name up, connects to a public address on port 443, asks for the certificate and closes the connection. Expired, self-signed and wrong-name certificates are read and not refused, and a private or internal address is never connected to.
Get the verdict, flat and structured
The status, the days left, the dates, the issuer, the names and the problems arrive in one JSON payload. A certificate that is read bills 2 credits, and a domain with no certificate to read bills nothing.

The evidence
Here is the evidence behind every number on this page.
Here are SSL Labs and 1Lookup side by side on the terms you check before you sign.
The terms that decide what a year actually costs, rather than what the first month does. “Not listed” means we could not verify it on either product’s published pages, not that the answer is nothing.
| Term | 1Lookup | SSL Labs |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum commitment | None. Monthly plans with no contract and no minimum volume; cancel any time | Not listed |
| Going over your quota | Not listed | No price is printed, so there is no overage rate. The docs say Qualys 'may limit your usage of the API, by enforcing a limit on concurrent assessments, and the overall number of assessments performed in a time period', and respond 429 to calls that start new assessments. |
| API access | Included on every plan and during the free trial; there is no tier that unlocks it | Register once with a POST to /api/v4/register (first name, last name, organization, organization email); analyze and getEndpointData then send that email in a request header. |
| Rate limit | 200 requests per 10 seconds for each API key on standard lookups and 1,000 requests a minute for each key on number type, HLR and MNP, and each account can make up to 1,000 requests a minute in total across all its keys; higher limits are available on request | No numeric limit is printed in the API docs. Successful calls carry X-Max-Assessments and X-Current-Assessments headers, the info call returns maxAssessments, currentAssessments and a newAssessmentCoolOff in milliseconds, and a new assessment submitted before the cool-off ends returns 429. |
| Support | Starter: Email Support; Growth: Priority Email & Chat Support; Professional: Chat + Live Meeting; Enterprise: Dedicated CSM | Not listed |
This is the SSL Labs fine print worth reading twice.
Published terms that change what SSL Labs costs or what you can do with it. Each one links to the SSL Labs page it was read on, because a claim about somebody else’s contract should be checkable in one click.
The API terms do not allow commercial use, use on a public web site, or making the API available to anyone other than your authorized employees without Qualys's express permission.

Who it is for
Pick 1Lookup or stay with SSL Labs depending on the job in front of you.
Choose 1Lookup if
you want a pass or fail answer on a domain's certificate in one quick call, with days left, issuer, hostname match and trust, inside your own product or workflow.
Consider SSL Labs instead if
you want a deep audit of a server you run: SSL Labs grades the whole TLS configuration, lists protocols and cipher suites, tests for named attacks and reports revocation and OCSP stapling, free of charge under its terms.
Questions
People ask these questions before they switch from SSL Labs.
What is SSL Labs used for?
Testing how well a public web server is set up for TLS. The SSL Server Test calls itself a 'free online service' that 'performs a deep analysis of the configuration of any SSL web server on the public Internet', and the API returns the same kind of assessment: a grade, the supported protocols and cipher suites, tests for named attacks such as Heartbleed, POODLE and ROBOT, and revocation and certificate transparency information.
What do the SSL Labs terms allow?
The API licence allows inspecting only sites and servers whose owners have given you permission. Without Qualys's express permission it does not allow commercial use, use on a public web site, or making the API available to anyone other than your authorized employees, and the docs say 'Commercial use is generally not allowed, except with an explicit permission from Qualys'. A hosting provider, certification authority, content delivery network or web development agency can get relaxed terms, on conditions that include offering the scan at no cost to all its customers.
How much does SSL Labs cost?
No price is printed: the API page says 'SSL Labs APIs are free to use, with restrictions'. No quota is printed either. The docs say Qualys may limit concurrent assessments and the number of assessments in a period, and answer 429 Too Many Requests when new assessments come too fast. Cached reports do not count against the limit on new assessments.
How much does 1Lookup charge for the same lookup?
2 credits per certificate read, free when the domain has no certificate to read. On the Starter plan ($99 a month for 20,000 credits) a check is about $0.010, which covers 10,000 certificates a month and is $9.90 per 1,000. At the Enterprise end of the rate card it is about $0.004. SSL Labs is the cheaper bill: it is free to use under its terms, against $0.010 for every certificate 1Lookup reads.
How long does each one take to answer?
The SSL Labs docs say server assessments 'usually take at least 60 seconds', and ask clients to poll every 5 seconds until the assessment starts and every 10 seconds until it finishes. 1Lookup answers in one request and one response, from one connection with an 8 second clock for the whole attempt.
What does SSL Labs return that 1Lookup does not?
A grade (A+ down to F, with T for no trust and M for a certificate name mismatch), the supported protocols and cipher suites, tests for named attacks such as Heartbleed, POODLE and ROBOT, a revocation status with CRL and OCSP addresses, whether OCSP stapling is deployed and whether certificate transparency information is present. 1Lookup reads the certificate and the connection it came over. It does not test or grade the server, check revocation or search transparency logs.
How do the certificate answers differ?
SSL Labs returns certificate problems as a bit mask (issues such as no chain of trust, hostname mismatch, revoked and self-signed) and dates as Unix timestamps, so a caller turns them into a plain verdict itself. 1Lookup returns the status in words, the days left as a number, dates as YYYY-MM-DD and each problem as a sentence.
Does SSL Labs need a registration?
API v4 needs a registration call first, with a first name, last name, organization and an organization email, and the docs say 'We do not allow the use of email services such as Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail'. Calls then send that email in a header, and an unregistered call returns 441. 1Lookup uses one API key for every product.
Where does SSL Labs beat 1Lookup?
On depth and price. It is free to use under its terms, it assesses the protocols, cipher suites and named attacks that 1Lookup does not test, it reports revocation status and certificate transparency information, it has an open-source client (ssllabs-scan), and its API page says it allows 'scheduled and bulk assessment'. 1Lookup reads the certificate only, and charges for every certificate it reads.
What is the best SSL Labs alternative?
If you need the full TLS assessment and a grade for a server you are allowed to test, SSL Labs is the right tool and it is free. If you want to check certificates inside your own product or at volume, in one request with a plain verdict and the days left, bulk CSV files and one balance that also pays for phone, email and IP checks, 1Lookup's SSL Certificate Check bills 2 credits only when a certificate is read.
Is SSL Labs worth it in 2026?
For testing a server you own or have permission to scan, yes: the web test is free and goes deep. For a service that reads certificates at volume or inside a product, read its terms against your use first, then compare a price per certificate read.
