At a glance
Here is where 1Lookup wins against USAspending.gov, and where USAspending.gov still wins.
Both read the federal government's public spending record. USAspending.gov is the official free source: contracts, grants, loans and every other award type, searchable by name, UEI or DUNS number, with an API that needs no key. 1Lookup answers one question per call from a company name or a UEI: whether the company holds federal contracts, how many dollars it was awarded over the last three federal fiscal years, how many awards that is, which agencies paid it and in which industries, with the right registration picked for you, billed only when the company has federal awards.
- One call from a company name or a UEI returns the finished answer: contract dollars in a named window, the award count, the top five agencies and industries, where USAspending.gov returns a list of registrations to choose from
- A name that fits several companies, a company with no contract dollars in the window, a name nobody holds and a source outage cost nothing, and a CSV with a company column returns one row per company
- The right registration is chosen for you, with the parent company named and up to five candidates listed when the name is ambiguous, so you never add up look-alike rows
- No breakdown calls to write and no retries to carry, and the same key and balance also pay for phone, email and IP validation
What it costs
From $6.00
per 1,000 contractor lookups; $14.85 on Starter
- It is the official source and it is free. The home page calls USAspending 'the official open data source of federal spending information, including information about federal awards such as contracts, grants, and loans', and the API needed no key when called on 25 October 2026.
- It covers every kind of award, not only contracts. The recipient search has tabs for All Awards, Contracts, Grants, Direct Payments, Loans and Other Financial Assistance, and the profile pages show 'award trends over time and top 5 rankings from a variety of categories'.
- It goes down to the single award. The endpoint list includes spending by award, spending by category (awarding agency, sub-agency, NAICS, PSC, state, county and more) and two endpoints that generate a zipped CSV download of award data.
- A recipient search takes a name, a UEI or a DUNS number, and the documented request takes up to 1000 results per page.

Short answer
USAspending.gov is the Treasury's official open data source for federal spending, free and keyless, with no single answer for a company: a name search returns a list of registrations to choose from. 1Lookup's Federal Contractor Lookup returns the chosen company's contract dollars, award count, top agencies and industries for 3 credits, about $0.015 on Starter, only when it has federal awards.
What replaces what
Here is which 1Lookup product matches each USAspending.gov job.

A real result
This is what one 1Lookup result looks like.
Send a name or a UEI
POST a company name of 2 to 150 characters, or the 12-character UEI. A UEI wins when both are sent, and a malformed entry is refused with a clear error and costs nothing.
We find the one company and read its awards
We search the federal government's public spending database, choose the one registration that clearly fits, and total its contract awards over FY2024 to FY2026. If several companies fit, we list up to five and stop there.
Get the record, flat and structured
The dollars, award count, agencies and industries arrive in one JSON payload. A company with contract awards bills 3 credits, and every other answer bills nothing.

The evidence
Here is the evidence behind every number on this page.
Here are USAspending.gov and 1Lookup side by side on the terms you check before you sign.
The terms that decide what a year actually costs, rather than what the first month does. “Not listed” means we could not verify it on either product’s published pages, not that the answer is nothing.

Who it is for
Pick 1Lookup or stay with USAspending.gov depending on the job in front of you.
Choose 1Lookup if
you have a company name or a UEI and want one finished answer in one call: the contract dollars of the last three federal fiscal years, the number of awards, the top agencies and the top industries, with the right registration chosen for you, charged only when the company has federal awards.
Consider USAspending.gov instead if
you want the federal award data itself for nothing, or more than one company's contracts: USAspending.gov is the official free source, needs no key, covers grants, loans and every other award type, and goes down to the single award with downloads.
Questions
People ask these questions before they switch from USAspending.gov.
What is USAspending.gov used for?
Reading what the federal government spends and who receives it. Its home page calls it the official open data source of federal spending information, including contracts, grants and loans, and its recipient search has tabs for All Awards, Contracts, Grants, Direct Payments, Loans and Other Financial Assistance. Its API serves the same data as JSON.
How does USAspending.gov pricing work?
It is free. Checked October 2026: the pages list no plan, quota or charge, and a keyless request to its recipient endpoint was answered with a 200, so there is no key or account to get. The pages print no rate limit and no uptime commitment, so a product built on the API carries its own retries and timeouts.
How much does 1Lookup charge for a contractor check?
3 credits per company with federal awards, free when the company has no federal awards. On the Starter plan ($99 a month for 20,000 credits) a company is about $0.015, which covers 6,666 companies a month and is $14.85 per 1,000. At the Enterprise end of the rate card it is about $0.006. USAspending.gov is the cheaper bill by definition: it costs nothing, and you pay for the time to build and keep the lookup instead.
What does USAspending.gov return, and what does 1Lookup return?
A recipient search on USAspending.gov returns a list of registrations, each with an id ending in P, C or R (parent, child or recipient with no parent), a UEI and an amount labelled 'Awarded Amount (from trailing 12 months of transactions)'. The agencies, the industries and the contract dollars over a window you choose come from separate spending-by-category calls with filters you build. 1Lookup returns the finished answer: the contract dollars over the last three completed federal fiscal years with the window named, the number of contract awards, the top five agencies and the top five industries with their dollars, the parent, the state and whether the company is a small business.
Which registration does 1Lookup pick when a company has several?
One search on USAspending.gov for a large contractor's name matched 272 recipient rows on 25 October 2026, parents, children and look-alikes. 1Lookup reads the candidates and takes the one that clearly leads, such as an exact name or an exact UEI. If several companies fit, it returns up to five of them with their UEI and state, so you can look again with the UEI, and it charges nothing for that answer.
What counts in the dollar total, and what does not?
The total counts contract awards over the last three completed federal fiscal years (October 1 to September 30), which is FY2024 to FY2026 in October 2026, and the answer names the window it used. Grants, loans and direct payments are not in that total. The answer adds the company's awards of all years and, when the company has loans, their face value, as separate figures. A company with only older awards, or only grants, shows no contract dollars in the window and is not charged.
How current is each source?
Both read the same public record, so 1Lookup is only as current as USAspending.gov is. A repeat lookup of the same input by the same user within one day is answered from the cache at no charge. If the source cannot be reached after one retry, 1Lookup returns an error and charges nothing.
Does 1Lookup replace the USAspending.gov API?
Not for research. If you want every award, grants and loans, a single award's detail or a bulk download, USAspending.gov is the place and it is free. 1Lookup is for the narrow question that comes up in a workflow: does this company really hold federal contracts, how much, and who pays it. It is one call with a stable answer, so there is no registration to choose and no breakdown to add up in your code.
Can I search by UEI as well as by name?
Yes. A 12-character UEI is looked up first, and if nobody carries it the same text is read as a name. When both a name and a UEI are sent, the UEI wins. A name can be 2 to 150 characters, and a trailing legal word such as Corporation or Inc. is ignored when matching, so Lockheed Martin Corp. and Lockheed Martin Corporation share one answer.
What is the best USAspending.gov alternative?
If you want the raw federal record for nothing, USAspending.gov itself is the answer and there is no better one. If you want one company's contract dollars, awards, agencies and industries without writing the search, the registration choice and the three breakdown calls, 1Lookup's Federal Contractor Lookup bills 3 credits only when the company has federal awards, on the same balance as phone, email and IP checks.
Where does USAspending.gov beat 1Lookup?
On price and breadth. It is free, it covers grants, loans, direct payments and every other award type as well as contracts, it goes down to the single award, and its endpoint list includes downloads that generate a zipped file of award data. 1Lookup returns the contract totals of one company and does not list awards.
Is it worth paying for a contractor check in 2026?
If you check a handful of companies a month, read USAspending.gov directly and pay nothing. If a team checks companies every day, as part of vetting a vendor, qualifying a lead or screening a counterparty, the per-company price buys back the minutes spent choosing between look-alike registrations and adding up the breakdowns, and a CSV with a company column returns one row per company.
