At a glance
Here is where 1Lookup wins against Geocodio, and where Geocodio still wins.
Both turn a US address into its census tract and the districts around it. Geocodio is a general geocoder: the first 2,500 lookups each day are free, then it is $1 per 1,000 lookups, and the census geography, the congressional district and the school district are separate appends that each count as one more lookup for every address. 1Lookup returns the tract, block group, block, county, state, congressional district, metro area, place and school district together in one flat object for a fixed number of credits, and an address the Census Bureau cannot locate costs nothing.
- One flat price per address matched, with no appends to count: the tract, the congressional district, the metro area and the school district together cost 2 credits, where Geocodio counts the address and each append as separate lookups
- The block group, block, county, state, congressional district, metro area, place and school district come back named in one object, with no field list to choose
- An address the Census Bureau cannot locate returns found: false at no charge, where Geocodio returns a lower-accuracy point to filter by score
- A CSV with an address column of up to 2M rows, one row per address, and the same key and balance also pay for phone, email and IP validation
What it costs
From $4.00
per 1,000 address lookups; $9.90 on Starter
- Cheaper per address: a lookup is $1 per 1,000 after 2,500 free lookups a day, and the census, congressional district and school district appends together make four lookups for one address, which is $4 per 1,000 addresses beyond the free tier on the pricing page's own rule.
- Years of census geography: the census append returns census_year, state and county FIPS, tract code, block code, block group, full FIPS, place, metro or micro statistical area, combined statistical area, metropolitan division and county subdivision, for every census year back to 2010 and for 2000 (county, place, tract and block FIPS only).
- Separate appends for congressional districts with legislator information, state legislative districts and school districts, plus ACS demographic, economic, family, housing and social data.
- Every result carries an accuracy score from 0.00 to 1.00 and an accuracy type, and the documentation recommends filtering on both.
- Batch endpoint of up to 10,000 lookups a request, a lists API for spreadsheets (file size limit 1 GB, with a recommended maximum of 10M lookups per list), and reverse geocoding.

Short answer
Geocodio is a geocoding API that adds data fields to an address. Its census append returns the tract, block, county, metro area and place, and the congressional district and school district are two more appends, each counted as an extra lookup per address. 1Lookup's Census Tract Lookup returns the tract, districts, metro area and school district as one object for 2 credits, about $0.010 on Starter, charged only when the address is matched.
What replaces what
Here is which 1Lookup product matches each Geocodio job.
Geocodio counts the address and each append as separate lookups. This is the same kind of answer as a single API call at one flat price, charged only when the address is matched.
Side by side
Both products are measured on the same criteria, using Geocodio's own published numbers.

A real result
This is what one 1Lookup result looks like.
Send a US street address
POST the address as one line, or as a street, city, state and ZIP. It needs a street number and a street name. An email address, a web link or an address with no street number is refused with a clear error and costs nothing.
We ask the Census Bureau where it sits
The Census Bureau places the address on its own map and names every boundary around it. We keep the ids as text, put the names beside them and add the benchmark and vintage that answered.
Get the areas, flat and structured
Tract, county, district, metro area, place and school district arrive in one JSON payload. An address matched bills 2 credits, and an address the Census Bureau cannot locate bills nothing.

The evidence
Here is the evidence behind every number on this page.
Here are Geocodio and 1Lookup side by side on the terms you check before you sign.
The terms that decide what a year actually costs, rather than what the first month does. “Not listed” means we could not verify it on either product’s published pages, not that the answer is nothing.

This is the Geocodio fine print worth reading twice.
Published terms that change what Geocodio costs or what you can do with it. Each one links to the Geocodio page it was read on, because a claim about somebody else’s contract should be checkable in one click.
Each data append counts as one additional lookup for each record, so geocoding 1,000 addresses with one append is counted as 2,000 lookups.
Read it on Geocodio’s siteGeocodio's documentation says field appends count as lookups: 5,000 addresses with the census append is 10,000 lookups, which is the whole 10,000-lookup limit of one batch request.

Who it is for
Pick 1Lookup or stay with Geocodio depending on the job in front of you.
Choose 1Lookup if
you want the census tract with its district, metro and school-district names at one flat rate per address, with no counting of appends, and a miss that is not charged.
Consider Geocodio instead if
you also need the point on the map, an accuracy score, or years of census geography: Geocodio is cheaper per address than 1Lookup's Starter rate even with the appends, gives the first 2,500 lookups each day free, and returns census geography for every year back to 2010.
Questions
People ask these questions before they switch from Geocodio.
What is Geocodio used for?
Geocoding and reverse geocoding for addresses in the United States, Canada and Mexico on pay-as-you-go, with the UK on its subscription plans, plus data fields appended to the result: congressional districts with legislator information, state legislative districts, school districts, census geographies for every census year back to 2010, American Community Survey demographic, economic, family, housing and social data, ZIP+4 and timezone. It has a batch endpoint of up to 10,000 lookups a request and a lists API for spreadsheets.
How does Geocodio pricing work?
One address or coordinate lookup is one credit, and each additional data append is one more credit. The first 2,500 credits used per day are free, and after that pay-as-you-go is $1 per 1,000. Flex subscriptions start at $325 a month for 350,000 credits, with $250 a month for each extra user, and Unlimited, a dedicated instance, starts at $1,350 a month. Pay-as-you-go covers the US, Canada and Mexico only and has a rate limit of 1,000 lookups a minute. Checked October 2026.
How much does 1Lookup charge for the same lookup?
2 credits per address matched, free when the address is not matched. On the Starter plan ($99 a month for 20,000 credits) a lookup is about $0.010, which covers 10,000 addresses a month and is $9.90 per 1,000. At the Enterprise end of the rate card it is about $0.004. Geocodio is the cheaper bill per address: its free daily allowance comes first, and a tract with its districts is about $4 per 1,000 addresses beyond it, against $99 for a Starter month.
How does Geocodio count lookups for census data?
Each address is one lookup and each field append is one more per address. The documentation gives the formula as Total Lookups = Number of Addresses x (1 + Number of Fields), and its example is 5,000 addresses with the census append, which is 10,000 lookups. To get the tract, the congressional district and the school district you add the census, cd and school appends, so one address is four lookups. At $1 per 1,000 lookups that is about $4 per 1,000 addresses beyond the free daily 2,500, calculated from the printed rates.
What does Geocodio return that 1Lookup does not?
Past years and extra data. The census append can return the geography for every census year back to 2010, and the 2000 geography with county, place, tract and block codes only. Geocodio also appends legislator information for each district, American Community Survey data, an accuracy score from 0.00 to 1.00 and an accuracy type with every result, and it reverse geocodes coordinates. 1Lookup returns the current geography for one address, with the benchmark and vintage it came from, and has no reverse lookup.
How do they handle an address that cannot be found?
Geocodio's documentation says that instead of returning no results for an address it cannot find, it returns a point based on the postal code or city with a much lower accuracy score and an accuracy type of place, and recommends filtering on the score and the type. 1Lookup returns found: false when the Census Bureau cannot locate the address, with a REVIEW verdict and no charge, and returns the matched address in full with an APPROVE verdict when it can.
Where does Geocodio beat 1Lookup?
On price, history and range. It gives the first 2,500 lookups each day free and charges $1 per 1,000 after that, appends included, which is less per address than 1Lookup's Starter rate. It covers more countries, returns census geography for past years, adds demographic data, scores every match, reverse geocodes, and sells a dedicated instance for high volume. 1Lookup returns the tract, districts and school district without choosing fields or counting appends.
Can I check a list of addresses at once?
Yes on both. Geocodio takes up to 10,000 lookups in one batch request, counting appends, and has a lists API for spreadsheets with a 1 GB file size limit. 1Lookup takes a CSV with an address column of up to 2M rows and returns one row per address with the tract, county, district, metro area, place and school district, and a row that is not matched is a free row.
What is the best Geocodio alternative?
If you geocode in volume, need past census years, demographics or other countries, or want the cheapest price per address, Geocodio is the better fit. If you want a US address turned into its tract and districts in one flat answer, with a free miss and one balance that also pays for phone, email and IP checks, 1Lookup's Census Tract Lookup bills 2 credits only when the address is matched.
Is Geocodio worth it in 2026?
If you want a full geocoder with census years, districts, demographics and a free daily allowance, yes: the pricing page prints 2,500 free lookups a day and $1 per 1,000 after, and every append is counted. If you only need the tract and the districts of an address and want one price per address without counting, compare the per-lookup price of 1Lookup.
