The short answer
A census tract lookup by address tells you which census tract a US street address sits in. This free tool reads the Census Bureau's address records and shows the address as the Census Bureau matched it, the 11-digit census tract ID and tract name, the county and the state. A free trial adds the districts, school district and coordinates.
- No signup needed
- Read from Census Bureau records
- US street addresses
A census tract finder tells you in seconds which tract and county a US address sits in.
The Census Bureau divides the country into census tracts, small areas that statistics are published for, and gives each one an 11-digit ID. Type a street address and this tool asks the Census Bureau's address records where it falls, then shows the address as the Census Bureau matched it, the tract's ID and name, the county and the state.
The tract ID is the key to the Census Bureau's own tables, such as the American Community Survey, which is where income, age and population are published for each tract. This tool returns the ID and the name, and nothing about what an area is like. To keep the tool free for everyone, an address looked up in the last 12 hours is shown again from a saved answer.
A street number and a street name are needed, and a city, state and ZIP make the match more reliable. When several addresses could match, the first is shown and the page says how many matched. A PO box, a very new street or a misspelled street suffix often comes back as not matched.

A census tract lookup returns these facts, and each one answers a different question.
This is an invented result for a made-up address, laid out the way a real one comes back. The matched address, the tract and the county are free on this page, and a free trial opens the rest.

Enter the address
Type a full US street address on one line. It needs a street number and a street name, and an email address or a web link is refused.
We ask the Census Bureau's records
The address is placed on the Census Bureau's own map, and the tract, county and state around it are read from the match.
Read the answer
You see the matched address, the census tract ID and name, the county and the state, or a plain sentence saying the address was not matched.
One lookup places an address on the Census Bureau's map and reads the areas around it.
This is the path a single lookup takes. Nobody is contacted and nothing is filed.
- You enter an addressA US street address with a number and a street name.
- The entry is checkedAn email address, a web link or an entry with no street number is refused before anything is used.An entry that cannot be an address stops here and costs no credits.
- The Census Bureau's records are readThe address is matched and the tract, county and state around it are read.
- You see the answerThe tract ID and name, the county and the state, or a plain reason the address was not matched.
Bulk address checks run the same lookup on a whole list with one CSV file.
The free tool checks one address at a time. With a 1Lookup account you upload a CSV file in the dashboard, pick the column that holds the addresses and download the same file back with the result columns filled in on every row. A spreadsheet drops the leading zeros of an ID it reads as a number, so open the ID columns as text. These rows are invented.

One lookup shows the census tract, county and state of a US street address.
The tract ID comes back as text with its zeros kept.
A tract ID in the Census Bureau's tables can start with a zero, and a number would drop it. The ID here is text, so it matches the Census Bureau's own tables exactly.
The county and state come with the tract.
You see the county and the state beside the tract, so a tract number that repeats in two counties is never mistaken for the wrong one.
An address that several records match says so.
The first match is shown and the page says how many matched, so a common street is not taken for one place without a check.
An address the Census Bureau cannot locate gets a plain answer.
A PO box, a new street or a misspelled suffix returns a clear sentence about what to check, not an empty page.
Lenders, researchers, site-selection teams and anyone asked for a tract number use this tool.
Lenders and compliance teams placing an application
Find the tract and county of an application address, then join the tract ID to the Census Bureau tables your analysts already use.
Researchers and nonprofits mapping the people they serve
Place a client's address in its tract, then join the ID to American Community Survey tables to study the area.
Site-selection teams checking a location
See the tract and county a store, a lead or a property address falls in before you sort a list by market.
Anyone who was asked for a tract number
Find the census tract ID a form, a grant application or a program asks for, from a street address.
These are the questions people ask about the free census tract lookup by address.
Is the census tract finder really free?
Yes. You can look up addresses without an account and without paying anything. A free 1Lookup trial removes the limit on lookups and adds the block group and block, the districts, the metro area, place and school district, the coordinates and the other addresses that matched.
Where does the information come from?
From the US Census Bureau's own public address records. The Census Bureau places the address on its map and names the tract, county and state around it, and we read that when you look an address up.
How do I read a census tract ID?
It has 11 digits: 2 for the state, 3 for the county and 6 for the tract. The state and county codes are called FIPS codes, and the whole ID is the key to the Census Bureau's tables, so you can join it to them.
What does the address need to look like?
A full US street address with a street number and a street name, from 8 to 200 characters. A city, state and ZIP make the match more reliable. An email address, a web link or an address with no street number is refused with a clear message and does not use up a lookup.
Why does an address come back not matched?
The Census Bureau could not locate it. A PO box, a street that is very new, a misspelled street suffix or a ZIP code that does not fit the street can all do that. Check the suffix and the ZIP, add the city and state, and try again.
Does it show income, population or other figures?
No. It shows the tract's ID and name, the county and the state, and never labels an area. Income, age and population are published by the Census Bureau for each tract, and the tract ID is the key to find them.
Why does my spreadsheet drop the first digit of an ID?
A spreadsheet that opens a file reads an ID as a number and drops its leading zeros. This page keeps every ID as text, and in a bulk result you open the ID columns as text to keep them.
Can I find a census tract from a latitude and longitude?
No. The tool takes a street address and shows the tract it sits in. The Census Bureau's own geocoder has a coordinate search if you only have coordinates.
How current are the boundaries?
The tool uses the Census Bureau's current address ranges and boundaries. The API answer also names the benchmark and the vintage that answered, so a result can be repeated later.
Can I place a list of addresses at once?
Yes, in a free trial. Upload a CSV with an address column or call the Census Tract Lookup API. Each address that is matched costs 2 credits, and an address that is not matched costs nothing.
