At a glance
Here is where 1Lookup wins against EPA ECHO, and where EPA ECHO still wins.
Both read the EPA's compliance and enforcement records for regulated facilities. EPA ECHO is the EPA's own free public site and web service: you search facility by facility, by program or by place, deselect the look-alike names it returns and read each facility's record yourself. 1Lookup takes a company or facility name and returns one answer: the active facilities that carry the name, how many are in significant non-compliance, and the inspections, notices of violation, formal enforcement actions and penalties added up, with the ten riskiest facilities listed, from one shared credit balance.
- One answer for a company: the active facilities that carry the name, how many are in significant non-compliance, and inspections, notices of violation, formal actions and penalties added up, where ECHO returns facility rows
- Look-alike names are dropped for you, and the EPA's loose count is shown beside the matched count, so a convenience store that once sold a company's fuel is not counted as the company
- A REVIEW, VERIFY or APPROVE verdict and the ten riskiest facilities, each linked to its record on the EPA's site, with the windows stated in every answer: 12 quarters for compliance and 5 years for enforcement
- A name no facility carries, a malformed entry and a lookup the EPA could not answer cost nothing, and a CSV with a company column returns one row per company, on the same balance that pays for phone, email and IP validation
What it costs
From $6.00
per 1,000 compliance checks; $14.85 on Starter
- It is the EPA's own record and it is free: the FAQ describes ECHO as 'a web tool developed and maintained by EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance for public use', and calls the information 'very reliable'.
- It covers more than a company roll-up. The site searches facilities by name or ID, by city, state or zip code, and by program (air, wastewater, biosolids, stormwater, hazardous waste, drinking water), and searches civil and criminal enforcement cases by case type, docket number, location, company name, industry and program.
- The Corporate Compliance Screener takes several company, subsidiary and trade-style names separated by semicolons, with match options such as 'Contains Each Term' and 'Begins With', lets you deselect false-positive records, and offers 'Download CSV File' and 'Download Excel File'.
- Everything is open: web services return XML, JSON or JSONP; the ECHO Exporter is 'a download for more than 1.5 million regulated facilities in one zip file' with over 130 data fields per facility, updated weekly; and ECHO Notify sends weekly email alerts for new compliance and enforcement activity.

Short answer
EPA ECHO is the EPA's free public site and web service for compliance and enforcement records on regulated facilities, and its pages list no plan, quota or charge. 1Lookup's Environmental Compliance Check reads the same records for a company name, drops the look-alike facilities, adds the totals up and gives a verdict, for 3 credits, charged only when a facility is found.
What replaces what
Here is which 1Lookup product matches each EPA ECHO job.
ECHO is free and you assemble the answer from its facility rows. This is the same compliance record rolled up for a company name in a single API call on a shared credit balance, charged only when a facility is found.
Side by side
Both products are measured on the same criteria, using EPA ECHO's own published numbers.

A real result
This is what one 1Lookup result looks like.
Send a name
POST a company or facility name, with a two-letter state if you want to narrow it. Endings such as Inc and LLC are dropped, and a malformed entry is refused with a clear error and costs nothing.
We read the EPA's records
The EPA's database is searched for active facilities, and only the ones whose own name carries every word you sent are kept. Their compliance status, inspections, enforcement actions and penalties are totalled over the stated windows.
Get the totals and the facilities, flat and structured
The totals, the ten riskiest facilities and an assessment arrive in one JSON payload. A company with a facility that carries its name bills 3 credits, and a name no facility carries bills nothing.

Who it is for
Pick 1Lookup or stay with EPA ECHO depending on the job in front of you.
Choose 1Lookup if
you have a company name and want its EPA record as one finished answer: the facilities that carry the name, how many are in significant non-compliance, and the inspections, enforcement actions and penalties added up, from one call that is billed only when a facility is found.
Consider EPA ECHO instead if
you want the EPA's own data for nothing or need more than a roll-up: ECHO is free, needs no login, searches by program and by enforcement case, lets you screen several company names at once and download CSV and Excel files, and offers a 1.5 million facility download.
Questions
People ask these questions before they switch from EPA ECHO.
What is EPA ECHO used for?
Looking up the EPA's compliance and enforcement records for the facilities it regulates. ECHO stands for Enforcement and Compliance History Online. It covers facilities regulated under the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act, and it searches facilities by name or ID, by city, state or zip code and by program, and civil and criminal enforcement cases by company name, docket number and more.
How does EPA ECHO pricing work?
It is free. The site's pages list no plan, quota or charge, and the FAQ says ECHO does not require users to log in. The web services return XML, JSON or JSONP, the web services page lists no key, registration or rate limit, and the page points anyone downloading a large volume to the ECHO data downloads. Checked October 2026.
How much does 1Lookup charge for the same check?
3 credits per company with a facility found, free when no EPA-regulated facility matches. On the Starter plan ($99 a month for 20,000 credits) a check is about $0.015, which covers 6,666 companies a month and is $14.85 per 1,000. At the Enterprise end of the rate card it is about $0.006. EPA ECHO is the cheaper bill: it is free, against $99 for a Starter month.
What does EPA ECHO return, and what does 1Lookup add?
ECHO returns facility rows, and the name search is loose: the Corporate Compliance Screener page warns it may over-select records that sound like the name, and gives DuPont returning a facility in Dupont, WA as its example, so you deselect the false positives before you generate a report. 1Lookup keeps only the active facilities whose own name carries every word you sent, adds the counts and penalties across them, and returns how many facilities the EPA returned in all beside how many carried the name, so a look-alike is never counted as the company's.
Where does EPA ECHO beat 1Lookup?
On price, breadth and depth. It is free, it needs no login, and it searches by program (air, wastewater, biosolids, stormwater, hazardous waste and drinking water) and searches civil and criminal enforcement cases, not only a company's facilities by name. The Corporate Compliance Screener takes several company, subsidiary and trade-style names at once and downloads CSV and Excel files, the ECHO Exporter is a download of more than 1.5 million regulated facilities with over 130 data fields each, and ECHO Notify sends weekly alerts. 1Lookup lists the ten riskiest matching facilities, not every one.
How current is each source?
ECHO's FAQ says its data are generally updated weekly, with exceptions: Safe Drinking Water Act data are updated quarterly, and real-time data are not presented. 1Lookup reads the same records when you look a company up, and says the day it read them in checked_at. A repeat lookup of the same company by the same user within 7 days comes from the cache at no charge.
Can either one find a company's sites under other names?
Neither finds them by owner. The ECHO FAQ says ECHO does not contain any corporate linkage data, and the Corporate Compliance Screener page says it does not provide corporate family linkages. 1Lookup matches a facility by its own name too, so a parent company's sites filed under other names are not found, and the answer says to confirm the facilities are the sites you mean. Try each trade name as its own lookup.
Can I check a list of companies, as in the Corporate Compliance Screener?
Yes, in both. The Corporate Compliance Screener takes several names separated by semicolons and returns one report you review and download. 1Lookup takes a CSV with a company column, adds a state after the name when you want one, and returns a row per company with its counts and verdict, billed per company with a facility found, with a row that finds nothing free.
What is the best EPA ECHO alternative?
If you want the EPA's raw records for free and can sort out the look-alike facilities, ECHO is the simplest source, and nothing beats it on price. If you want one company as a finished answer, with the totals added up and a verdict, and a bulk CSV on one balance that also pays for phone, email and IP checks, 1Lookup's Environmental Compliance Check bills 3 credits only when a facility is found.
Is EPA ECHO worth it in 2026?
If you want the EPA's records for nothing, or the depth that sits behind a facility, such as enforcement cases, program reports and nationwide downloads, yes. The FAQ says information for larger facilities is much more complete than for smaller ones and that EPA cannot positively state that a facility without violations in ECHO is fully compliant, so read it as what the EPA's records show. If you want a company's facilities added up in one call, compare the per-lookup price of 1Lookup.
