The short answer
An EPA facility compliance lookup finds the active facilities in the EPA's database whose own name carries a company's name, and totals what the EPA's records show for them. This free tool shows how many facilities matched, how many are in significant non-compliance, how many were in violation in the last 12 quarters and the review call.
- No signup needed
- Read from the EPA's records
- Every state and territory
A company check shows what the EPA's records say about the facilities that carry its name.
The EPA keeps a public record for every facility it regulates: whether it is in compliance, how often it was inspected, which notices of violation and enforcement actions it received, and the penalties it paid. That record is filed facility by facility, so a company with many sites has many records and no single page. Type a company name and this tool finds the active facilities whose own name carries it and adds their records up.
You see how many facilities matched, how many the EPA flags as in significant non-compliance now, how many were in violation in the last 12 quarters, the states they are in, the review call the records support and the facility with the most on record. Compliance is counted over the last 12 quarters, 3 years, and inspections, actions and penalties, which a free trial adds, over the last 5 years. To keep the tool free for everyone, a company looked up in the last 12 hours is shown again from a saved answer.
Facilities are matched by their own name, not by who owns them, so a parent company's sites filed under other names are not found. Order, capital letters and endings such as Inc and LLC do not matter, and only active facilities are searched. A state after the name narrows a common one. A name no facility carries returns a plain answer and no charge from the API.

A company check returns these facts, and each one answers a different question.
This is an invented result for a made-up company, laid out the way a real one comes back. The counts, the review call and the facility with the most on record are free on this page, and a free trial opens the rest.

This is the path a single lookup takes. Nobody is contacted and nothing is filed.

- The name is cleanedEndings such as Inc and LLC are dropped, and a name that is only an ending is refused before anything is used.A name that is only a legal ending stops here and costs no credits.

- You see the answerThe counts and the review call, or a plain reason there are none.
Bulk company checks run the same lookup on a whole list with one CSV file.
The free tool checks one company at a time. With a 1Lookup account you upload a CSV file in the dashboard, pick the column that holds the company names and download the same file back with the result columns filled in on every row. A state can follow the name after a comma. These rows are invented.

One lookup totals the EPA-regulated facilities that carry a company's name and how many are in significant non-compliance.
Every total counts only the facilities that carry your name.
The EPA's own search also returns sites that once used a name. This tool keeps a facility only when its current name has every word you typed, so the totals are about the right sites.
The EPA's flag for a serious violator comes through.
A facility in significant non-compliance is counted on its own line, so you see at a glance whether any site is a serious violator now.
The time windows are stated, not hidden.
Compliance is counted over the last 12 quarters and inspections, actions and penalties over the last 5 years, and the page says which is which.
A name that matches nothing gets a plain answer.
A typo, a name no active facility carries or a name the EPA matched only loosely returns a clear sentence saying so, not an empty page.

These are the questions people ask about the free EPA facility compliance lookup.
Is the EPA facility compliance lookup really free?
Yes. You can look up a company without an account and there is nothing to pay. The page limits how many lookups each visitor can run, to keep it free for everyone. A free 1Lookup trial removes that limit and shows the penalties and up to ten facilities with their inspections, actions, addresses and programs.
Where does the information come from?
From the EPA's own public compliance database, which holds the compliance status, inspections, enforcement actions and penalties of the facilities it regulates. The EPA refreshes it weekly, and a free trial links each facility to its own page on the EPA's site.
What does significant non-compliance mean?
It is the EPA's own flag for a facility that is a serious violator now. The tool counts how many of the matched facilities carry it, and a free trial shows which ones.
How does the tool decide which facilities belong to a company?
By name. A facility counts only when its own name has every word you typed, whatever the order or the capital letters. Endings such as Inc and LLC are ignored, and a long word also matches the start of a longer one. It does not look at who owns the facility.
Why does a company I know come back with fewer facilities than I expected?
Because a parent company's sites filed under other names are not found, and only active facilities are searched. Try the name the facilities use, or add a state to narrow a common name.
How far back do the figures go?
Compliance is counted over the last 12 quarters, which is 3 years. Inspections, notices of violation, formal enforcement actions and penalties are counted over the last 5 years. The free answer says which window each number covers.
Does a clean result mean the company has no violations?
No. It means the EPA's records show none for the facilities that carried the name, in the windows checked. Facilities filed under other names, other agencies' records and anything not yet reported to the EPA are not in it.
What happens when a name matches thousands of facilities?
The tool reads the first 3,000 the EPA returns and says the totals are partial. Adding a state, or a more specific name, narrows the search so every facility is read.
Can I check a list of companies at once?
Yes, in a free trial. Upload a CSV with a company column or call the Environmental Compliance Check API. Each company with at least one facility that carries its name costs 3 credits, and a name no facility carries costs nothing.
