At a glance
Here is where 1Lookup wins against API Ninjas, and where API Ninjas still wins.
Both turn a domain into its DNS records over an API. API Ninjas sells one key for a directory of small APIs, with the DNS Lookup on every plan, a free plan of 3,000 calls a month, plans up to 10,000,000 calls and an uptime promise on the paid ones. 1Lookup is one DNS call: the A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, CAA and SOA records of any public domain, the mail provider and the DNS host worked out from them, and the names behind an IP address on the same endpoint, at a flat credit price on a balance that also pays for phone, email and IP checks.
- All eight record types in one call for any domain at one price, with the mail provider and the DNS host named from them
- Nothing is billed when a name does not exist, has none of the eight types or does not answer in time, and unused monthly credits roll over for 3 months
- An IP address goes to the same endpoint and returns the names behind it, at the same price as a domain
- A CSV with a domain column checks a whole list, on the same balance that pays for phone, email and IP checks
What it costs
From $4.00
per 1,000 DNS lookups; $9.90 on Starter
- Far cheaper per call at full use of the quota: Developer works out to $0.59 per 1,000 calls, Business to about $0.15 and Professional to about $0.03 (arithmetic on the printed plans).
- One key covers every API in its directory, and the DNS page lists WHOIS, MX lookup and IP lookup beside it as similar APIs.
- A free plan of 3,000 calls a month and a live demo that needs no key, with an MCP server for AI agents.
- Plans state an uptime SLA, from 99% on Developer to 99.99% on Enterprise, and yearly billing is 34% off.
What it costs
$59 a month ($39 a month billed yearly) for 100,000 API calls a month
Short answer
API Ninjas sells plans in API calls across all of its APIs: Developer is $59 a month ($39 billed yearly) for 100,000 calls, Business $149 ($99) for 1,000,000 and Professional $299 ($199) for 10,000,000, which is $0.59, about $0.15 and about $0.03 per 1,000 calls, after a free plan of 3,000 calls. 1Lookup's DNS Lookup costs 2 credits per name with records, about $0.010 on Starter, or $9.90 per 1,000, so API Ninjas is far cheaper per call. Its pages mark the A, AAAA, CNAME, MX and TXT types premium only; 1Lookup returns all eight types at one price.
What replaces what
Here is which 1Lookup product matches each API Ninjas job.
API Ninjas counts one API call for each request to its DNS endpoint, from a monthly call quota shared with its other APIs. This is the same unit on 1Lookup, one domain or IP address, billed in credits only when something is found, and nothing for a name that does not exist, a name with none of the eight types, an IP address with no reverse name or a lookup that times out.
Side by side
Both products are measured on the same criteria, using API Ninjas's own published numbers.
| Criteria | ||
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Monthly plans with universal credits; core phone, email and IP lookups cost 1 credit, enrichment and intelligence products cost more | Plans sized in API calls a month across all of its APIs, with the DNS Lookup API (GET /v1/dnslookup) on every plan. Free is $0 for 3,000 calls a month; Developer is $59 a month ($39 a month billed yearly) for 100,000 calls; Business is $149 a month ($99 yearly) for 1,000,000; Professional is $299 a month ($199 yearly) for 10,000,000; Enterprise is custom. The DNS endpoint returns a JSON array of records for one domain, and the A, AAAA, CNAME, MX and TXT types are marked premium only, as are top-level domains other than .com. |
| Starting price | $99/mo for 20,000 credits. At 2 credits each (DNS Lookup API), that is $9.90 per 1,000 DNS lookups on Starter, down to $4.00 on Enterprise. | $59 a month ($39 a month billed yearly) for 100,000 API calls a month. |
| Free option | Free single lookups via the online tools at 1lookup.io/tools, no account required | Free plan, $0 for 3,000 calls a month, for evaluation: no commercial use, 100 calls an hour and attribution required. The free plan returns the NS, PTR, SRV, SOA and CAA types, for .com domains. |
| Free trial | 7-day free trial on every plan: $5 of credits on Starter, $20 on Growth, Professional, and Enterprise, with no payment today | No separate trial: the Free plan and a live demo that needs no API key are the ways to try it. |
| Do credits expire? | Unused monthly credits roll over for 3 months; separately purchased credits last 1 year | Not published |

A real result
This is what one 1Lookup result looks like.
Send a domain or an IP address
POST a domain, a web address or an email address, or an IP address. It is cut down to the domain or the address. A single word, an internal name or a private address is refused with a clear error and costs nothing.
We ask DNS for all eight record types at once
1Lookup asks for the A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, CAA and SOA records together, each under its own time limit, then reads the mail provider from the MX hosts and the DNS host from the name servers. An IP address is asked for its reverse name instead.
Get the records, flat and structured
The records arrive in one JSON payload, flat for a spreadsheet and structured for code. A name with records bills 2 credits, and a name with none bills nothing.

The evidence
Here is the evidence behind every number on this page.
Here are API Ninjas and 1Lookup side by side on the terms you check before you sign.
The terms that decide what a year actually costs, rather than what the first month does. “Not listed” means we could not verify it on either product’s published pages, not that the answer is nothing.
| Term | 1Lookup | API Ninjas |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum commitment | None. Monthly plans with no contract and no minimum volume; cancel any time | Plans can be cancelled at any time, and yearly billing is 34% off. |
| API access | Included on every plan and during the free trial; there is no tier that unlocks it | The DNS Lookup API is on every plan, but the A, AAAA, CNAME, MX and TXT record types and domains outside .com need a premium plan. |
| Rate limit | 200 requests per 10 seconds for each API key on standard lookups and 1,000 requests a minute for each key on number type, HLR and MNP, and each account can make up to 1,000 requests a minute in total across all its keys; higher limits are available on request | 100 API calls per hour on the Free plan; no rate limit is listed for the paid plans. |
| Uptime SLA | Not listed | 99% on Developer, 99.95% on Business and Professional, 99.99% on Enterprise; none on Free. |
| Support | Starter: Email Support; Growth: Priority Email & Chat Support; Professional: Chat + Live Meeting; Enterprise: Dedicated CSM | Standard support on Developer, priority support on Business and Professional, dedicated support on Enterprise; none on Free. |

Who it is for
Pick 1Lookup or stay with API Ninjas depending on the job in front of you.
Choose 1Lookup if
you want the A, AAAA, MX, TXT, CAA and SOA records with the mail provider and the DNS host named in the same answer, reverse DNS on the same endpoint, a CSV upload for a list of domains, and nothing charged when a name has no records.
Consider API Ninjas instead if
you want the lowest cost per call, from $0.59 per 1,000 calls on Developer down to about $0.03 on Professional, one key for every API in its directory, or a free plan of 3,000 calls a month to try a few lookups.
Questions
People ask these questions before they switch from API Ninjas.
What is API Ninjas used for?
Getting data from one API key across a directory of small APIs. Its DNS Lookup API (GET /v1/dnslookup) returns a JSON array of the DNS records of a domain in one call, and the page lists WHOIS, MX lookup and IP lookup beside it as similar APIs. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents and a live demo that needs no key.
How does API Ninjas pricing work?
Plans sized in API calls a month across all of its APIs, with the DNS Lookup API on every plan: Free is $0 for 3,000 calls, Developer is $59 a month ($39 billed yearly) for 100,000, Business is $149 ($99) for 1,000,000, Professional is $299 ($199) for 10,000,000, and Enterprise is custom. Yearly billing is 34% off. Checked October 2026.
How much does 1Lookup charge for the same lookup?
2 credits per name with records, free when the name has no records. On the Starter plan ($99 a month for 20,000 credits) a name is about $0.010, which covers 10,000 DNS lookups a month and is $9.90 per 1,000. At the Enterprise end of the rate card it is about $0.004.
Is 1Lookup cheaper than API Ninjas per DNS lookup?
No. API Ninjas works out to $0.59 per 1,000 calls on Developer, about $0.15 on Business and about $0.03 on Professional if the whole quota is used, against $9.90 per 1,000 on 1Lookup Starter and $4.00 on Enterprise. The quota is shared across every API on the key, so those figures hold only if all of it goes to DNS calls.
Which record types does each one return?
API Ninjas returns a list of records, and its page marks the A, AAAA, CNAME, MX and TXT types as premium only, so the Free plan returns the NS, PTR, SRV, SOA and CAA types, for .com domains. Top-level domains other than .com are premium too. 1Lookup returns A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, CAA and SOA for any domain at one price, and adds the mail provider and the DNS host, which API Ninjas does not describe.
Where does API Ninjas beat 1Lookup?
On price per call at every plan, on volume, since plans run to 10,000,000 calls a month, and on the extras: SRV records, a free plan, uptime promises of 99% on Developer to 99.99% on Enterprise, and one key for every other API in the directory. 1Lookup bills more per name and reads the current records of one name or address at a time.
What does API Ninjas' pricing leave out?
Two things its pages spell out. The Free plan is for evaluation, with no commercial use, 100 calls an hour and attribution required, and data caching and storing is not allowed on the Developer and Free plans. And the quota counts calls to every API on the key, not only DNS.
When is a 1Lookup DNS lookup free?
When the domain does not exist, when it exists but has none of the eight record types, when an IP address has no reverse name, and when DNS does not answer in time, which returns a 503 with a Retry-After header. Each of those costs 0 credits. Only a name where something was found is billed.
What is the best API Ninjas alternative?
If you want the cheapest raw DNS call and already use other APIs on the same key, API Ninjas is the better value. If you want every record type on any domain at one price, the mail provider and DNS host named for you, an IP address on the same endpoint and a bill of zero when nothing is found, 1Lookup's DNS Lookup bills 2 credits for every name with records.
Is API Ninjas worth it in 2026?
Yes for volume and for side projects: it is far cheaper per call than 1Lookup, and the free plan lets you try it. Check which record types and which domains your use needs, since the A, AAAA, CNAME, MX and TXT types are premium only and so are domains outside .com. If you look up a few thousand names a month to see where their mail and DNS are hosted, compare the per-name price of 1Lookup.
