At a glance
Here is where 1Lookup wins against WhoisXML DNS Lookup API, and where WhoisXML DNS Lookup API still wins.
Both look up the DNS records of a domain over an API. WhoisXML sells it as monthly query plans, from 2,000 queries for $7 to 2,000,000 for $899, with 500 free queries on sign-up, and lists reverse DNS, reverse IP, reverse MX and reverse NS as separate APIs beside DNS history, WHOIS and SSL data. 1Lookup answers one request with the A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, CAA and SOA records, the mail provider and the DNS host worked out from them, and the names behind an IP address on the same endpoint, at a flat credit price on a balance that also pays for phone, email and IP checks.
- All eight record types in one call, with the mail provider and the DNS host named from them
- Nothing is billed when a name does not exist, has none of the eight types or does not answer in time, and unused monthly credits roll over for 3 months
- An IP address goes to the same endpoint and returns the names behind it, with no second API to buy
- A CSV with a domain column checks a whole list, on the same balance that pays for phone, email and IP checks
What it costs
From $4.00
per 1,000 DNS lookups; $9.90 on Starter
- Cheaper per query at every printed tier: 2,000 queries a month cost $7 ($3.50 per 1,000) and 2,000,000 cost $899 (about $0.45 per 1,000, arithmetic on the printed plan).
- A wide DNS and domain catalog from one vendor: DNS Chronicle for history, Reverse DNS, Reverse IP, Reverse MX and Reverse NS, Subdomains Lookup, WHOIS and SSL Certificates are all listed in its API menu.
- Several ways to pay for the same API: monthly and yearly subscriptions and one-time purchases are tabs on the pricing page, and WXA.ONE shares one balance across its products from $129 a month.
- A free allowance of 500 queries on sign-up, and a custom plan for volumes above 2,000,000 queries a month.
What it costs
$7 a month for 2,000 queries (monthly subscription)
Short answer
WhoisXML prices its DNS Lookup API in monthly query plans: 2,000 queries for $7, 10,000 for $24 and 100,000 for $124, which is $3.50, $2.40 and $1.24 per 1,000, after 500 free queries on sign-up. 1Lookup's DNS Lookup costs 2 credits per name with records, about $0.010 on Starter, or $9.90 per 1,000, so WhoisXML is cheaper per query at every tier it prints. 1Lookup bills nothing when a name has no records, and one call returns all eight record types with the mail provider and DNS host.
What replaces what
Here is which 1Lookup product matches each WhoisXML DNS Lookup API job.
WhoisXML counts one query for each DNS lookup it answers, from a monthly plan. This is the same unit on 1Lookup, one domain or IP address, billed in credits only when something is found, and nothing for a name that does not exist, a name with none of the eight types, an IP address with no reverse name or a lookup that times out.

A real result
This is what one 1Lookup result looks like.
Send a domain or an IP address
POST a domain, a web address or an email address, or an IP address. It is cut down to the domain or the address. A single word, an internal name or a private address is refused with a clear error and costs nothing.
We ask DNS for all eight record types at once
1Lookup asks for the A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, CAA and SOA records together, each under its own time limit, then reads the mail provider from the MX hosts and the DNS host from the name servers. An IP address is asked for its reverse name instead.
Get the records, flat and structured
The records arrive in one JSON payload, flat for a spreadsheet and structured for code. A name with records bills 2 credits, and a name with none bills nothing.

Who it is for
Pick 1Lookup or stay with WhoisXML DNS Lookup API depending on the job in front of you.
Choose 1Lookup if
you want a domain's A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, CAA and SOA records in one call with the mail provider and the DNS host already named, reverse DNS on the same endpoint, a name with nothing to show not charged, and a CSV that runs a whole column of domains on a balance shared with your other lookups.
Consider WhoisXML API instead if
you want the lowest printed price per query, from $3.50 per 1,000 at 2,000 queries a month down to about $0.45 per 1,000 at 2,000,000, or you already buy WHOIS, reverse IP, DNS history or subdomain data from the same vendor and want one balance for all of it.
Questions
People ask these questions before they switch from WhoisXML DNS Lookup API.
What is the WhoisXML DNS Lookup API used for?
Checking the DNS records of a domain over an API, for example its mail servers and name servers. WhoisXML sells it as one of a family of domain data APIs: DNS Chronicle for history, Reverse DNS, Reverse IP, Reverse MX, Reverse NS, Subdomains Lookup, WHOIS and SSL certificates are all in its API menu, and its pages describe the lookup as checking MX, NS and other server records.
How does WhoisXML DNS Lookup API pricing work?
After 500 free queries on sign-up, monthly subscriptions sized in queries: 2,000 for $7, 5,000 for $14, 10,000 for $24, 20,000 for $39, 50,000 for $74, 100,000 for $124, 500,000 for $399, 1,000,000 for $599 and 2,000,000 for $899, with a custom plan above that. The pricing page also has one-time purchase and yearly subscription tabs, and WXA.ONE, a shared balance across WhoisXML API products, starts at $129 a month. Checked October 2026.
How much does 1Lookup charge for the same lookup?
2 credits per name with records, free when the name has no records. On the Starter plan ($99 a month for 20,000 credits) a name is about $0.010, which covers 10,000 DNS lookups a month and is $9.90 per 1,000. At the Enterprise end of the rate card it is about $0.004.
Is 1Lookup cheaper than WhoisXML per DNS lookup?
No. WhoisXML works out to $3.50 per 1,000 queries at 2,000 a month, $2.40 at 10,000 and $1.24 at 100,000, against $9.90 per 1,000 on 1Lookup Starter and $4.00 on Enterprise. Even WhoisXML's smallest plan is under 1Lookup's Enterprise rate. What 1Lookup adds is a bill of zero when a name has no records, and a bigger answer from one call.
What does one 1Lookup call return?
The A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, CAA and SOA records of the name, including the SOA timers, plus two plain labels worked out from them: the mail provider, read from the MX hosts, and the DNS host, read from the name servers. An IP address in the same field returns its reverse DNS names. WhoisXML's pages do not describe a mail provider or DNS host label, and sell Reverse DNS as its own API.
When is a 1Lookup DNS lookup free?
When the domain does not exist, when it exists but has none of the eight record types, when an IP address has no reverse name, and when DNS does not answer in time, which returns a 503 with a Retry-After header. Each of those costs 0 credits. Only a name where something was found is billed.
Where does WhoisXML beat 1Lookup?
On price per query at every tier it prints, on volume, since plans run to 2,000,000 queries a month with a custom plan above, and on the catalog around it: DNS history, reverse IP, reverse MX, reverse NS, subdomains, WHOIS and SSL data from one vendor, with monthly, yearly and one-time ways to pay. 1Lookup reads the current records of one name or address at a time.
Can I look up an IP address too?
Yes. Send an IP address instead of a domain to the same endpoint and 1Lookup returns the names published for it, free when it has none. WhoisXML lists Reverse DNS as a separate API in its menu. A CSV with a domain or IP column runs a whole list in one job.
What is the best WhoisXML DNS Lookup API alternative?
If you query very large lists for the plain records, or need DNS history and reverse searches from the same vendor, WhoisXML is the cheaper and wider product. If you want one call that returns all eight record types with the mail provider and DNS host, takes an IP address too and bills nothing when it finds nothing, 1Lookup's DNS Lookup bills 2 credits for every name with records.
Is WhoisXML DNS Lookup API worth it in 2026?
Yes for high-volume DNS work: it is cheaper per query than 1Lookup at every tier printed, and its plans go to 2,000,000 queries a month. Plan for the monthly quota, and for the fact that reverse lookups and DNS history are other APIs. If you look up a few thousand names a month to see where their mail and DNS are hosted, compare the per-name price of 1Lookup.
