At a glance
Here is where 1Lookup wins against WhatRuns, and where WhatRuns still wins.
Both tell you what a website is built with. WhatRuns is a free Chrome extension with no sign-up: one click shows the technologies of the site open in your browser, and it can alert you when a site you follow changes a tool. 1Lookup is an API and a CSV upload: the CMS, shop platform, analytics, marketing tools, hosting and frameworks of every site on a list, with versions, detected from its headers, HTML and DNS, plus the email provider from MX, one row per site.
- An API and a CSV upload: a whole list of websites in one job, one row per site, where an extension reads one tab
- About $0.005 a site that answers on Starter, and nothing for a blocked or missing site
- Flat fields for a CRM column, with versions and the email provider from MX
- A free checker on the site for one-off looks, with no sign-up

Short answer
WhatRuns is free, needs no sign-up and works one site at a time in your own browser; its site mentions no API, bulk lookup or paid plan. 1Lookup's Tech Stack Lookup costs 1 credit per site that answers, about $0.005 on Starter or $4.95 per 1,000, and reads a whole list by API or CSV. WhatRuns does what 1Lookup does not: it costs nothing and sees what loads after a page's scripts run in your browser.
WhatRuns shows one site at a time in your browser. 1Lookup reads a whole list by API for $0.005 a site.
The same answer for each site: its CMS, shop platform, analytics, marketing tools, hosting and frameworks, with versions. A site that blocks the check, does not exist or does not answer costs nothing.

WhatRuns is a free browser extension with no API or bulk lookup, so it has no bar here: the bars are the two API rivals that print a price.
At 20,000 websites a month, 1Lookup is $396 a month less than BuiltWith: 80% less.
Starter at $99 a month covers up to 20,000 tech stack lookups. A site that blocks the check costs nothing, and credits you do not spend here work on every other 1Lookup lookup.
What replaces what
Here is which 1Lookup product matches each WhatRuns job.
WhatRuns is free for the site in your tab. 1Lookup bills one website and its technologies, in credits, only when the site answered with its home page, and nothing for a site that blocks the check, a name that does not exist or a site that does not answer.
Side by side
Both products are measured on the same criteria, using WhatRuns's own published numbers.

A real result
This is what one 1Lookup result looks like.
Send a domain
POST a domain, a web address or an email address. It is cut down to the site's host name. An IP address or a private name is refused with a clear error and costs nothing.
We read the home page and DNS at once
1Lookup asks for the home page once and queries MX, TXT, NS and the www CNAME at the same time, with 10 seconds and 2 MB for the page. Internal addresses are refused, redirects included.
Get the stack, flat and grouped
Every technology arrives with its version, group and where it was seen, in one JSON payload. A site that answered bills 1 credit; a blocked or missing site bills nothing.

WhatRuns

WhatRuns pricing and product facts verified against whatruns.com as of October 2026. Prices change, so confirm on the vendor’s site. 1Lookup numbers come from the live rate card.
Who it is for
Pick 1Lookup or stay with WhatRuns depending on the job in front of you.
Choose 1Lookup if
you need the stacks of a list of websites, not one tab at a time: an API and a CSV upload with one row per site, versions, the email provider from MX, and a price of about half a cent a site that answers.
Consider WhatRuns instead if
you only want to see the stack of the site open in your browser, for free and with no sign-up, including tools a page loads after its scripts run.
Questions
People ask these questions before they switch from WhatRuns.
Is WhatRuns free?
Yes. Its site says 'It's free' and 'No sign-up required', and names no paid plan. It is a browser extension: it shows the technologies of the site open in your browser, one site at a time. Checked October 2026.
Does WhatRuns have an API or a bulk lookup?
Its site mentions neither. To read the stacks of a list of websites you need an API or a bulk upload, which is what 1Lookup's Tech Stack Lookup is: one call per site, or a CSV with a domain column and one row per site back.
How much does 1Lookup charge for a tech stack lookup?
1 credit per site that answers, free when the site blocks the check, does not exist or does not answer. On the Starter plan ($99 a month for 20,000 credits) a site is about $0.005, which covers 20,000 lookups a month and is $4.95 per 1,000. At the Enterprise end of the rate card it is about $0.002.
Where does WhatRuns beat 1Lookup?
On price and on what a browser sees. WhatRuns is free with no sign-up, and because it runs in your own browser it sees tools a page adds after its scripts run, which a server-side read can miss. It can also follow a site and alert you when it starts or stops using a technology.
When is a 1Lookup tech stack lookup free?
When the site blocks the check, when the name does not exist, when the site has no home page, and when it does not answer in time. Each costs 0 credits. Only a site that answered with its home page is billed.
Can I try 1Lookup's checker for free too?
Yes. The free tech stack checker on 1lookup.io reads one site at a time with no sign-up, a few times a day, and hands off to the full product when you want a list.
What is the best WhatRuns alternative?
For the site in your tab, WhatRuns is free and quick. For a list of sites, a CRM or an app that needs the answer in code, 1Lookup's Tech Stack Lookup reads each site for about $0.005 and charges nothing for a blocked one.
