At a glance
Here is where 1Lookup wins against MxToolbox, and where MxToolbox still wins.
Both can read the DNS records of a domain over an API. MxToolbox is the email delivery toolbox: one REST request runs one command, such as a, mx, ptr, soa or txt, beside SPF, DKIM, DMARC, BIMI, MTA-STS and TLS-RPT checks, blacklist lookups, network tests and a Monitor API, with the API quota set per plan. 1Lookup is one DNS call: the A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, CAA and SOA records, the mail provider and the DNS host worked out from them, and the names behind an IP address on the same endpoint, at a flat credit price on a balance that also pays for phone, email and IP checks.
- All eight record types in one call, CAA included, with the mail provider and the DNS host named from them, where MxToolbox runs one command per request
- A price you can read before you buy: nothing is billed when a name does not exist, has none of the eight types or does not answer in time, and unused monthly credits roll over for 3 months
- An IP address goes to the same endpoint and returns the names behind it, at the same price as a domain
- A CSV with a domain column checks a whole list, on the same balance that pays for phone, email and IP checks
What it costs
From $4.00
per 1,000 DNS lookups; $9.90 on Starter
- Built for email delivery work: the same API runs the SPF, DKIM, DMARC, BIMI, MTA-STS and TLS-RPT checks and blacklist lookups, which DNS Lookup returns only as raw records.
- A Monitor API to query, add and remove monitors, which suits teams that already watch their sending domains there.
- A PTR command for reverse DNS, an ASN command and network tests such as ping, trace and port checks on the same key.
- A free test endpoint that needs no key, and a free account that includes DNS requests.

Short answer
MxToolbox prints no price for its API. A free account gets 64 DNS requests a day by its rate-limit table and no network requests, paid plans have a quota per plan, and one request runs one command, so reading the A, AAAA, MX, SOA and TXT records of a domain takes five DNS requests. 1Lookup's DNS Lookup costs 2 credits per name with records, about $0.010 on Starter, or $9.90 per 1,000, and returns all eight record types, the mail provider and the DNS host in one call. MxToolbox does what 1Lookup's DNS Lookup does not: SPF, DKIM and DMARC checks, blacklist lookups and monitors.
What replaces what
Here is which 1Lookup product matches each MxToolbox job.
MxToolbox counts one DNS request for each command, against the quota of the plan. This is a different unit on 1Lookup: one domain or IP address with every record type, billed in credits only when something is found, and nothing for a name that does not exist, a name with none of the eight types, an IP address with no reverse name or a lookup that times out.
Side by side
Both products are measured on the same criteria, using MxToolbox's own published numbers.
| Criteria | ||
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Monthly plans with universal credits; core phone, email and IP lookups cost 1 credit, enrichment and intelligence products cost more | A REST API whose lookups count against two quotas, DNS requests and network requests. Free accounts get DNS requests only: the rate-limit table lists 64 a day, and the quickstart says free accounts include 68 DNS API requests. Paid plans have a quota 'per plan', and no price for the API is printed on the API pages; the product page has a Contact Us button. One request runs one command (a, aaaa, mx, ptr, soa, spf, txt and others), so reading several record types takes several requests. |
| Starting price | $99/mo for 20,000 credits. At 2 credits each (DNS Lookup API), that is $9.90 per 1,000 DNS lookups on Starter, down to $4.00 on Enterprise. | Not published; quote-based |
| Free option | Free single lookups via the online tools at 1lookup.io/tools, no account required | A free account: 64 DNS requests a day per the rate-limit table (the quickstart says 68), and no network requests. |
| Free trial | 7-day free trial on every plan: $5 of credits on Starter, $20 on Growth, Professional, and Enterprise, with no payment today | A free test endpoint that needs no API key works for example.com, and a free account includes DNS requests. |
| Do credits expire? | Unused monthly credits roll over for 3 months; separately purchased credits last 1 year | Not published |

A real result
This is what one 1Lookup result looks like.
Send a domain or an IP address
POST a domain, a web address or an email address, or an IP address. It is cut down to the domain or the address. A single word, an internal name or a private address is refused with a clear error and costs nothing.
We ask DNS for all eight record types at once
1Lookup asks for the A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, CAA and SOA records together, each under its own time limit, then reads the mail provider from the MX hosts and the DNS host from the name servers. An IP address is asked for its reverse name instead.
Get the records, flat and structured
The records arrive in one JSON payload, flat for a spreadsheet and structured for code. A name with records bills 2 credits, and a name with none bills nothing.

Who it is for
Pick 1Lookup or stay with MxToolbox depending on the job in front of you.
Choose 1Lookup if
you want every record type of a domain in one request at a price you can read, the mail provider and the DNS host named, reverse DNS on the same endpoint, and a name with nothing to show not charged.
Consider MxToolbox instead if
your work is email delivery: its API runs the SPF, DKIM, DMARC, BIMI and MTA-STS checks and blacklist lookups, and has a monitor API for watching sending domains, which a plain DNS lookup does not.
Questions
People ask these questions before they switch from MxToolbox.
What is the MxToolbox API used for?
Email delivery work. Its REST API runs the same checks as the site: DNS commands such as a, aaaa, mx, ptr, soa, spf and txt, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, BIMI, MTA-STS and TLS-RPT checks, blacklist lookups, network tests such as ping, trace and port checks, and a Monitor API to query, add and remove monitors.
How does MxToolbox API pricing work?
No price for the API is printed on its API pages. Free accounts get DNS requests only: the rate-limit table lists 64 a day, reset at 12:00 am UTC, and no network requests. Paid plans have a quota per plan, and the product page has a Contact Us button. The prices elsewhere on the site, $129 and $399 a month, are for its Delivery Center monitoring plans, not the API. Checked October 2026.
How much does 1Lookup charge for the same lookup?
2 credits per name with records, free when the name has no records. On the Starter plan ($99 a month for 20,000 credits) a name is about $0.010, which covers 10,000 DNS lookups a month and is $9.90 per 1,000. At the Enterprise end of the rate card it is about $0.004.
Is 1Lookup cheaper than the MxToolbox API?
That cannot be said, because MxToolbox prints no API price to set beside it. What can be counted is requests: one MxToolbox request runs one command, so the A, AAAA, MX, SOA and TXT records of one domain are five DNS requests, and a free account's 64 a day cover 12 such domains. One 1Lookup call returns all eight types.
Which record types does each one return?
MxToolbox returns what each command asks for, and the commands it lists include a, aaaa, mx, ptr, soa, spf and txt but no cname, ns or caa command, with a dns command that runs a general health check. 1Lookup returns A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, CAA and SOA together, and adds the mail provider, read from the MX hosts, and the DNS host, read from the name servers.
Where does MxToolbox beat 1Lookup?
On everything around email delivery: SPF, DKIM, DMARC, BIMI, MTA-STS and TLS-RPT checks, blacklist lookups, a Monitor API and network tests on the same key, plus a free test endpoint that needs no key. 1Lookup's DNS Lookup returns the records and two labels, and does not grade them. For SPF, DKIM and DMARC, 1Lookup sells a separate Email Authentication Check.
When is a 1Lookup DNS lookup free?
When the domain does not exist, when it exists but has none of the eight record types, when an IP address has no reverse name, and when DNS does not answer in time, which returns a 503 with a Retry-After header. Each of those costs 0 credits. Only a name where something was found is billed.
Can I look up an IP address too?
Yes on both. MxToolbox has a ptr command for reverse DNS and an asn command, each its own request. On 1Lookup an IP address goes to the same endpoint as a domain and returns the names published for it, free when it has none. A CSV with a domain or IP column runs a whole list in one job.
What is the best MxToolbox alternative?
If you troubleshoot mail delivery, check SPF, DKIM and DMARC, watch blacklists or keep monitors, MxToolbox is the fuller tool. If you want the DNS records of a name in one call with a price you can read, the mail provider and DNS host named, an IP address on the same endpoint and a bill of zero when nothing is found, 1Lookup's DNS Lookup bills 2 credits for every name with records.
Is MxToolbox worth it in 2026?
Yes for email delivery work: nothing on this page matches its checks and monitors, and the free account and test endpoint let you try the commands. Ask for the API price before you plan around it, since it is not printed. If what you need is the records and where a domain's mail and DNS are hosted, compare the per-name price of 1Lookup.
