This free Indian HLR lookup shows whether an Indian mobile number is active.

An HLR lookup asks a mobile number's own network whether the SIM is switched on and reachable. Enter an Indian mobile number above, with India already selected, and 1Lookup's free tool returns its status, its country and whether it was ported, without sending an SMS. It needs no signup.

Also try the Indian phone number checker or the Indian carrier lookup.

An HLR lookup answers only for mobile numbers, so check that an Indian number has the shape of a mobile before you ask.

Only mobile lines have an entry in a Home Location Register. These are India's rules from the numbering data.

NumberWhat the digits showWhat the HLR lookup does
An Indian mobileA mobile number has 10 digits after +91, or 11 written at home, starting 06, 07, 08 or 09.Asks the network whether the SIM is on and reachable. Outside the US and Canada the answer usually comes live from the network.
An Indian landlineA landline has 10 digits after +91, starting 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 or 08, such as +91 11 XXXX XXXX.No status comes back, because a landline has no entry in a Home Location Register. Use the Indian phone number checker for its line type.
A number that moved networkMobile number portability lets a subscriber keep a number and change network, and about 15.83 million subscribers asked to port in August 2026 according to TRAI. A number that moves keeps its digits. The Ported row reads Yes, No or Unknown, and Unknown means the network gave no answer.

These are the answers an HLR lookup gives for an Indian mobile number, and what to do with each.

The status is the headline of every result. A record read instead of a live query never says that the phone is on.

StatusWhat the network is sayingWhat to do
Active / reachableThe SIM is registered on a network and can receive a call or SMS now.Safe to message or call.
Temporarily unreachableThe number exists, but the phone may be off or out of coverage.Keep it and retry later, because it is not a bad number.
No active lineThe network reports no subscriber on this number.Remove it from the list.
Invalid or not in serviceThe records have no assigned number like this one.Remove it from the list, and check the digits first.
AssignedA record shows the number is assigned, and it does not show that the phone is on.Treat it as a number in use, and check its line type before you text it.
UnknownThe network gave no usable answer.Treat it as unresolved, never as invalid, and check it again later.

About 15.83 million Indian subscribers asked to port their mobile number in August 2026, and seven service areas sent more than a million requests each.

Porting lets a subscriber keep a number and change network, so the digits at the start of a mobile number do not show which network it is on today. These are the seven service areas with more than a million porting requests in August 2026, and the total across all service areas was 15,829,976.

An Indian mobile number is +91 followed by 10 digits, and the first one is 6, 7, 8 or 9.

How an Indian mobile number is built

Written with the country code

  1. +91Country code
  2. 8Mobile start
  3. 1234 567899 more digits

Written at home

  1. 0Replaces +91
  2. 8Mobile start
  3. 1234 567899 more digits

The +91 and the 0 do the same job, so a number is never written with both.

An HLR lookup of an Indian mobile number travels to its network and stops before anything reaches the phone.

This is the path one lookup takes. Outside the US and Canada the answer usually comes from the network that holds the number, which is why it says whether the SIM is on right now.

What one Indian HLR lookup does
  1. You enter the numberType it the way it is written at home, such as 081234 56789, or paste it with +91. It has to be a mobile.
  2. Its format is checkedEach type of number has its own rules. A mobile needs 10 digits after +91 and starts with 06, 07, 08 or 09 at home.
  3. The number's own network is askedThe query goes to the network that holds the number and stops before any message is delivered.Stops here: no SMS is delivered and the phone never rings.
  4. You see the statusActive, temporarily unreachable, no active line or unknown, with the country and the ported flag.

An Indian mobile number has 10 digits after +91 and starts with 06, 07, 08 or 09, so any other length is not a valid mobile.

These lengths come from the numbering data for India. A mobile number has 11 digits when it is written at home with its 0. Mobile and landline starts overlap, because 080 is Bangalore and 079 is Ahmedabad, so the first digit alone does not give the type.

Number typeStarts with at homeDigits after +91Written at home
Mobile06, 07, 08 or 0910081234 56789
Landline01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 or 0810011 XXXX XXXX

Three common mistakes make an Indian number fail the check, and each one is quick to fix.

  1. Keeping the 0 after +91 adds a digit.

The 0 is only for dialing inside India, so +91 081234 56789 is wrong. Drop the 0 and write +91 81234 56789.

  2. Typing too few or too many digits makes a number invalid.

A mobile number has 10 digits after +91. With 9 or 11 it cannot be a valid mobile, so look for a missing or doubled digit.

  3. Leaving the wrong country selected changes how the number is read.

The lookup reads a number by the rules of the country selected above, so keep India selected for a +91 number. Paste a number with its + and country code and the country is read from the number itself.

These are the questions people ask most about HLR lookups of Indian phone numbers.

How do I check if an Indian mobile number is active?

Enter the number in the box above with India selected. Type it the way it is written at home, such as 081234 56789, or with the country code, such as +918123456789. The free tool returns its status, its country and the ported flag, and an active status means the SIM is registered and reachable.

How many digits is an Indian mobile number?

A mobile number has 10 digits after +91, or 11 written at home, starting 06, 07, 08 or 09.

Can an HLR lookup check an Indian landline?

No. Only mobile lines have an entry in a Home Location Register, so a landline cannot return a connectivity status. A landline has 10 digits after +91, starting 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 or 08, such as +91 11 XXXX XXXX. The Indian phone number checker gives the line type of any number.

Does the free HLR lookup show which network an Indian number is on?

The free result shows the status, the country and the ported flag. The current and original carrier come with a free account.

Does an HLR lookup show whether an Indian number was ported?

Yes. The Ported row reads Yes or No when the network answered, and Unknown when it gave no answer. Unknown is not the same as No.

Can I tell which network an Indian mobile number is on from its digits?

No. Mobile number portability lets a subscriber keep a number and change network, and about 15.83 million subscribers asked to port in August 2026 according to TRAI. The Ported row of the HLR lookup shows whether a number has moved.

What does temporarily unreachable mean for an Indian mobile number?

The number exists, but the phone may be off or out of coverage right now. That is not the same as an invalid number, so keep it and check it again later.

Is the answer live for Indian numbers?

Outside the US and Canada a mobile number usually gets a live answer from the network that holds it. When the lookup reads number records instead, the result says assigned, which means the number is in use and not that the phone is on.

Can I run an HLR lookup on a whole list of Indian mobile numbers?

Yes. This free tool checks one number at a time. A 7-day free trial opens CSV upload and the API, at 5 credits a number, and a number the network reports as invalid is not charged.

Does the person know I ran an HLR lookup on their number?

No. No SMS is sent and the phone never rings, so its owner is never told.
