Truecaller opens Scam Checker to the web, no app or sign-in required

Truecaller has launched Scam Checker, a free web and Android tool that lets users check a suspicious phone number, link or message for signs of fraud without downloading an app or signing in. The Stockholm-based company says its caller ID service has more than 500 million users, and the tool was built on scam intelligence the company has gathered.

Why it matters: A free, no-login scam checker widens the tools prospects can use to screen any number that calls or texts them, including legitimate outbound business lines. Businesses that call or text prospects should expect more numbers to get checked before they're picked up.

Card issuer sued under Rosenthal and TCPA over calls allegedly made after a verbal stop request

A card issuer is facing a Rosenthal and TCPA suit over calls allegedly placed after a consumer verbally asked the company to stop. In a separate case covered in the same digest, a judge ruled the FDCPA doesn't require debt collectors to send statements, but stopping them could still be deceptive. A judge also denied a motion to dismiss from furnishers in an FCRA suit over fraudulent student loans, and JD data cited in the digest shows the share of financially unhealthy consumers dipped to 63%.

Why it matters: A verbal stop request allegedly triggering TCPA and Rosenthal exposure is a reminder that call suppression has to work off spoken requests, not just written ones. Businesses that call prospects need suppression lists that update the moment someone asks to stop being called, by any channel.
