Free ZIP Code Lookup
A ZIP code lookup tells you which place a five-digit US postal code covers. Enter any of the 40,979 codes below and you get the city and state, the county, the phone area codes used in that state, the nearest other codes and an approximate location. No account, no limit.
Point at a state to see how many ZIP codes it holds.
What a ZIP code actually is
A ZIP code is a set of mail delivery routes, not a region. The Postal Service groups addresses that can be delivered together and gives the group a number, which is why ZIP codes cross city boundaries, cross county lines, change shape when routes change, and cannot be drawn accurately on a map. Every ZIP code map you have seen is somebody's approximation of the addresses inside one, which is also why no two of them agree.
That matters for anyone using ZIP codes as data. A ZIP is a good key for sorting post and a poor one for describing a place, so a figure quoted "per ZIP code" is usually a figure per ZCTA, the Census Bureau's area-shaped approximation of a ZIP. These pages show the facts the postal dataset actually holds: the place, the state, the county and an approximate centre. They do not show population or time zone, because the source does not have them and inventing them would be worse than leaving them out.
ZIP codes by state
All 52 states and territories in the dataset, with the places holding the most codes in each. ZIP count is a rough proxy for how much mail an area takes, not a population figure.

Frequently asked questions
How do I look up a ZIP code?
Type the five-digit code into the box above. You get the city and state it covers, the county, the phone area codes used in that state, the nearest other ZIP codes and an approximate location on the map. No account and no signup.
How many ZIP codes are there in the US?
This directory covers 40,979 active US ZIP codes. The Postal Service issues rather more than that in total, because it also assigns codes to individual PO Box facilities and to single high-volume organisations, and those have no geography attached to publish.
What is the difference between a ZIP code and a ZCTA?
A ZIP code is a set of mail delivery routes. A ZCTA is the Census Bureau's approximation of that set as an actual area, built so census data can be tabulated against something with a shape. They mostly line up, but there are fewer ZCTAs than ZIP codes and their boundaries are not identical, which is why population figures quoted per "ZIP code" are almost always ZCTA figures wearing the wrong label.
Can one ZIP code cover more than one city?
Yes, and it is common. The Postal Service gives each code one preferred city name for addressing, and that name often covers several neighbouring towns and unincorporated areas. The reverse happens too: any large city is split across dozens of codes.
Does a ZIP code tell me the time zone?
Not from this data. The source these pages are built on records no time zone, and several states span two zones, so stating one would be a guess presented as a fact. We do not show anything the source does not contain.
Is this ZIP code lookup free?
Yes. Every page is built from a dataset held in this site, with no lookup running behind it, so there is nothing to meter and no limit on how many codes you check.
